Amelia Island: Beaches & Victorian Waterfront
Amelia Island has managed to remain one of the least developed barrier islands in Florida — a consequence of its northern position above the most-developed stretch of Florida's Atlantic coast and the early state protection of Fort Clinch's northern tip. The Victorian commercial district of Fernandina Beach on the island's western shore has a working shrimp boat harbour and 19th-century storefronts along Centre Street that have changed less than most Florida towns; the Florida House Inn has been operating continuously since 1857. The Atlantic beach on the eastern shore is 13 miles of barrier island shoreline, hard-packed at low tide, uncrowded except on summer weekends, and backed by intact dune habitat.

Fernandina Beach — Centre Street Historic District
The Victorian waterfront commercial district on the Amelia River — Centre Street's National Register buildings house coffee shops, boutiques, and galleries along a harbour where working shrimp boats still operate. The Palace Saloon, Florida's oldest continuously operating bar (1903), anchors the block at Centre and 2nd Street. A slow morning walk through the district followed by coffee at one of the independent cafes is the right way to start.

Lunch
Florida House Inn
★ 4The oldest operating hotel in Florida, continuously in service since 1857 — a two-story clapboard inn on 3rd Street that has hosted guests from José Martí to Ulysses S. Grant. Lunch in the inn's dining room is a historically appropriate midday stop; the food is Southern comfort with fresh seafood incorporated from the adjacent shrimping fleet.

Amelia Island Main Beach
★ 4.713 miles of Atlantic barrier island beach — wide, hard-packed sand at low tide with a dune system intact enough for loggerhead turtle nesting. The beach is uncrowded outside summer weekends and backed by sea oats and maritime scrub rather than development on most of its length.
