Crystal River & Homosassa — Manatee Springs, Wild Waters & the Gulf
A three-day journey to the springs of Florida's Nature Coast, where warm, clear water draws hundreds of manatees each winter and Crystal River offers one of the only legal, in-water manatee encounters in the world. Day one is the trip's marquee: a gentle swim or snorkel among the manatees at Three Sisters Springs, whose glassy blue vents are a wildlife spectacle unlike any other. Day two heads south to Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park — where a floating underwater observatory lets you stand eye-to-eye with manatees and Gulf fish — and a slow drift down the Homosassa River. Day three explores the ancient ceremonial mounds of Crystal River Archaeological State Park and the wide Gulf sunset at Fort Island Beach before the drive home. Note: manatee season is at its best from November through March. Three days of clear springs, gentle giants, and old-Florida coast.
