San Gabriel Peak, Switzer Canyon & Malibu Creek

The 5.4-mile out-and-back to San Gabriel Peak's 6,161-foot summit is the best single-day high-country hike accessible from Los Angeles without an overnight permit. The trail ascends from the Mount Disappointment trailhead through white fir and ponderosa pine forest, gaining 2,100 feet to the radio tower-dotted summit with clear-day views to the Pacific Ocean and the San Bernardino peaks. The ridge walk to the summit passes through the burn zone of the 2020 Bobcat Fire — the recovery ecology is striking.

A roadhouse tavern at 4,400 feet on Angeles Crest Highway, operating since 1939 as the social hub of the high San Gabriel Mountains. Cold beers, burgers, and the mountain-biker crowd that descends from Cloudburst Summit on weekends. The building survived the 2020 Bobcat Fire by 400 yards.

The most beloved waterfall hike in the San Gabriel Mountains — 5 miles round-trip through a canyon of big-cone Douglas firs and canyon live oaks descending into Arroyo Seco canyon wilderness. The lower falls drop 50 feet into a deep pool that is swimmable in summer. The trail beyond the main falls continues into the Arroyo Seco canyon where no roads have ever gone.

A Pasadena institution on Green Street with a California-American menu built around the wood-burning grill — the Hawaiian ribeye, a house signature for 30+ years, is the most-ordered dish. The bar scene is lively and the outdoor terrace fills on warm evenings. One of the better post-hike dinners in the greater LA area.

The 8.5-mile round trip to the summit of Mount Wilson (5,710 ft) via the Mount Wilson Trail from the Sierra Madre trailhead, the same trail used by botanist Asa Gray in 1875. The observatory at the summit (1904, Carnegie Institution) has three working telescopes including the 100-inch Hooker Telescope where Hubble discovered the expansion of the universe in 1929. The 360° summit view encompasses the LA Basin, San Gabriel Valley, and on clear days the Channel Islands.

A ~10-mile round trip from the Chantry Flat parking area to the 5,710-foot summit of Mount Wilson via Winter Creek Trail, gaining 2,400 feet through old-growth bigcone spruce and canyon live oak forest. The summit hosts the historic Mount Wilson Observatory (1904), built by the Carnegie Institution — the 100-inch Hooker Telescope where Edwin Hubble confirmed the expansion of the universe in 1929 still stands. On clear days the views sweep from Altadena and the San Gabriel Valley floor all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

A serious modern American restaurant on Holly Street in Old Town Pasadena, with a wood-burning hearth driving a seasonal menu of California ingredients. The beef tartare with fermented black garlic and the cast-iron skillet chicken are the kitchen's anchors. Small wine list focused on natural wines from California and the Rhône.

The Rock Pool was used as the Mash filming location from 1972–1983 — the Korean War military camp set occupied the meadow above the creek, and the volcanic rock formations and oak woodland look nothing like Korea and entirely like the Santa Monica Mountains. The 3.5-mile trail to Century Lake passes through the gorge carved by the creek through volcanic and limestone outcroppings; the canyon walls are 30 feet high and the creek crossings are accessible all year.

A private beach restaurant accessed through a tollgate on Malibu Road, serving California coastal cuisine from a terrace directly on the sand. The ceviche and the fish tacos are the lunch anchors; the $30 parking fee covers a meal credit. The beach is one of Malibu's most protected coves, with calm water suitable for kayaking and paddleboarding.

The volcanic headland at the north curve of Santa Monica Bay — trails from the beach parking lot climb the bluff to a whale-watching point with the full Malibu coastline visible from Zuma Beach to the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The Chumash village occupied this promontory for over 8,000 years before Spanish contact; the cave formations below the bluff are accessible at low tide.
