The short walk from the visitor center area along the Green River bluff through old-growth oak and hickory forest is a peaceful close to the cave day. Dinosaur World is a cheerfully unpretentious roadside attraction where more than 150 life-size dinosaur sculptures — ranging from a 4-foot Velociraptor to a 40-foot Brachiosaurus — populate an outdoor sculpture garden of walking paths through native Kentucky woodland. Lost River Cave, just a mile from the Cave City tourist strip, offers a genuinely unusual experience: a short (25-minute) electric boat tour through a large cave passage to an underground lake. The Lost River enters the cave through a portal large enough to walk upright, then flows through a series of vaulted chambers to the lake deep inside — the underground ecosystem, including cave fish and rare cave invertebrates, is part of the interpretive tour. During the Civil War, Confederate cavalry under General John Hunt Morgan sheltered in the cave during a raid through Kentucky. The property above the cave is a wildflower valley with nature trails and butterfly gardens that are worth a short walk before or after the boat tour.
