Barataria Preserve: Bayous, Boardwalks & Alligators

The Barataria Preserve visitor center in Marrero provides essential orientation to the 26,000-acre bottomland hardwood and marsh ecosystem that once extended across the entire lower Mississippi Delta. The center's exhibits explain the hydrology of the deltaic plain, the ecology of cypress-tupelo swamp, and the cultural history of the Barataria region — named for the pirate Jean Lafitte's headquarters at Barataria Bay, where he operated a smuggling network that supplied New Orleans for decades before aiding Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. The 2-mile Bayou Coquille Trail begins here and passes through all three habitat types — bottomland hardwood forest, swamp, and marsh — on a combination of upland trail and elevated boardwalk over the bayou.

The Plantation Trail connects to the Marsh Overlook boardwalk — a 2.5-mile loop through the heart of the Barataria swamp where alligator sightings are essentially guaranteed year-round. American alligators are the apex predator of this ecosystem and regulate the marsh's ecology by maintaining 'gator holes' — depressions that retain water during dry periods and support fish, wading birds, and invertebrates. The boardwalk sections over the cypress-tupelo swamp are the most atmospheric sections: the still black water, the hanging Spanish moss, the sound of prothonotary warblers in spring, and the occasional eruption of an alligator sliding off a log into the water below.

Pack a lunch from New Orleans before departing — the preserve has picnic tables near the visitor center and no food service on site. An ideal setup for a midday break between the morning and afternoon trail sections.

The National Park Service offers ranger-led canoe tours of the Barataria bayous seasonally — typically on weekend mornings from January through May — with routes that cover the inner channels of the cypress swamp inaccessible on foot. The tours last approximately 3 hours and require advance reservation. Private outfitters including Gulf Wilderness and Louisiana Lost Land Tours offer kayak rentals and guided tours year-round, departing from the preserve launch point on Bayou des Familles. Paddling through the cathedral cypress trees with alligators on the banks and egrets overhead is one of the defining outdoor experiences of coastal Louisiana.
