Little Big Econ — Wild Econlockhatchee Hiking, the Kolokee Trail & Cypress Bluffs

Just forty-five minutes northeast of Orlando, past the last of the suburbs near Oviedo and Geneva, the land turns suddenly wild along the Econlockhatchee River. The Little Big Econ State Forest protects a rare thing in Central Florida — an undammed, blackwater river cutting genuine bluffs through pine flatwoods and oak hammock, its banks so unexpectedly steep and forested they feel transplanted from farther north. This is a hiker's and paddler's day: the Kolokee Loop and the Florida National Scenic Trail trace the high sandy bluffs above the tannin-dark water, while the river itself offers a twisting, log-strewn paddle through cypress and cabbage palm. Wildlife is abundant and the crowds are thin — swallow-tailed kites wheeling overhead in summer, otters and turtles in the current, deer and turkey in the flatwoods. It is one of the closest true wild rivers to the city, and one of the least known.

The Kolokee Loop is the signature hike of the forest — a roughly 4.7-mile circuit from the Barr Street trailhead that shares miles of tread with the orange-blazed Florida National Scenic Trail. From the parking area the path drops toward the Econlockhatchee and follows the river's high bank, where the tea-colored water slides past unexpectedly steep, forested bluffs. The route weaves between shaded oak-and-palm hammock along the river and open pine flatwoods on the uplands, with boardwalks over the wettest stretches. Start early to beat the Central Florida heat and humidity; carry all your water, as there is none on the trail, and expect the river bottoms to be buggy in the warm months.

The scenic climax of the loop is the stretch of river bluffs where the Econ has carved banks ten to twenty feet high — a genuine rarity in famously flat Central Florida, cloaked in live oak, laurel oak, and cabbage palm above the dark, swirling current. An old railroad trestle crossing gives an elevated vantage over the river and makes a natural turnaround or rest point. This is prime wildlife territory: watch for river otters, softshell and cooter turtles hauled out on logs, and, overhead in spring and summer, the forked silhouettes of swallow-tailed kites hunting the treetops. It's the perfect place to pause on the bluff and eat something before continuing.

For those who bring or shuttle a kayak or canoe, the Econlockhatchee is one of the most rewarding small-river paddles near Orlando — narrow, twisting, and genuinely wild. The tannin-stained water winds tightly beneath a closed canopy of cypress, oak, and cabbage palm, with frequent deadfall to duck under and around, giving the run a backwoods, expeditionary feel very close to the city. The classic put-in near Snow Hill Road leads down through the state forest reach, past sandy banks and the same high bluffs seen from the trail. Go with adequate water levels and daylight to spare; the log-strewn channel is slow going, and there are no easy bailout points once you commit.

Back toward Oviedo, this friendly neighborhood spot is an ideal way to cap a day on the Econ — a welcoming, unfussy kitchen turning out burgers, sandwiches, and hearty local fare a short drive from the trailhead. After miles on the bluff trail or a slow paddle down the river, it's the natural place to cool off, refuel, and swap notes on the day's wildlife before the easy drive back to Orlando. Oviedo and neighboring Geneva have a handful of comparable casual eateries if you'd prefer a different table.
