Crystal River & the Nature Coast: Manatees and Mermaids

The most visited springs in Crystal River NWR — three interconnected spring vents producing water so clear and warm (72°F year-round) that West Indian manatees crowd into the enclosed basin from November through March in numbers that can exceed a hundred animals at once. Rent a kayak or clear kayak from Crystal River Kayak Company or Manatee Paddle on US-19 before you arrive; there are no rentals inside the refuge. The paddle from the launch ramp to Three Sisters is under a mile. In summer the manatees disperse to the Gulf but the springs are still excellent for snorkeling. Follow NWR rules: no touching manatees, stay horizontal in the water, keep noise down.

A Crystal River institution on the waterway — grouper, mullet, and Gulf seafood served in an unpretentious dining room where fishing guides eat lunch after their morning charters. The grouper sandwich is the local benchmark and what you should order.

A free public spring park directly on Kings Bay — a second spring access point where you can wade in from the shore and snorkel the shallow spring-fed water that flows into the bay. Less concentrated than Three Sisters but also less managed: the afternoon here is relaxed paddling and floating in the warm current while manatees move through the bay in winter months.

Waterfront dinner in downtown Crystal River — steamed blue crabs, shrimp, and cold beer on a deck above the water, consistent and unpretentious, the right way to end a full day on the springs.

Florida's manatee rehabilitation center — injured manatees brought in from propeller strikes and cold stress are treated here and released back to the Gulf after recovery. The underwater Fish Bowl observatory lets you stand below the spring vent and watch manatees, tarpon, and hundreds of fish move through the crystal column of water around you. The park's native wildlife also includes Florida panthers, black bears, and river otters on display.

A Homosassa River waterfront restaurant with an outdoor floating deck — steamed clams, smoked mullet spread, and Gulf seafood at a spot that locals have been using as a lunch anchor for decades.

The only city in the world with a live mermaid show as its official attraction — performers have been doing underwater choreography in a spring-fed 400-seat submerged theater since 1947, breathing through air hoses anchored to the floor. The spring also launches a river kayak trail down the Weeki Wachee River through subtropical forest to Bayport Park on the Gulf, one of the clearest and most peaceful river paddles on Florida's Nature Coast.
