St. Augustine: America's Oldest City
Ninety minutes north of Orlando, St. Augustine has been continuously occupied since 1565 — 55 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth. The Spanish built Castillo de San Marcos in coquina stone that absorbed cannonballs rather than shattering; Henry Flagler rebuilt the city in Gilded Age grandeur in the 1880s and turned a mosquito-infested outpost into the first American resort destination. The result is a city that layers five centuries of history on a grid of narrow streets barely wider than a mule cart.

Castillo de San Marcos
