Historic Micanopy Antique Village
Micanopy, founded in 1821, is the oldest inland town in Florida — a single tree-shaded main street of nineteenth-century brick storefronts and Cracker cottages beneath an extraordinary canopy of live oaks dripping with Spanish moss. Named for the Seminole chief who fought here in the Second Seminole War, the village has reinvented itself as an antiquing destination, its old buildings packed with book dealers, curiosity shops, and vintage stalls that reward slow browsing. The place is so atmospheric it stood in for a Florida town in the film Doc Hollywood. Paynes Prairie Preserve Overlook
★ 4.7Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park protects a 21,000-acre basin savanna that so astonished the naturalist William Bartram in 1774 that he called it the 'great Alachua Savannah' — a vast wet prairie of grass and sky unlike anywhere else in Florida. From the Micanopy side, the La Chua Trail and the boardwalk observation platforms open onto the basin, where wild American bison and Spanish 'cracker' horses roam free among alligators, sandhill cranes, and countless wading birds. The fifty-foot observation tower off US-441 gives a sweeping overview of the whole expanse. Bring binoculars, walk a boardwalk at least a short way in, and watch for bison against the grass — it is one of the wildest scenes within reach of Orlando.
