Sarasota: The Ringling, Siesta Key & the Gulf
Sarasota is the cultural capital of Florida's Gulf Coast — a mid-size city with an outsized arts scene anchored by John Ringling's extraordinary bequest: a 66-acre bayfront estate with his personal art museum, the Ca'd'Zan winter mansion, and the Ringling Circus Museum, all left to the state of Florida in 1936. St. Armands Circle and the waterfront keep the Gilded Age resort atmosphere alive; Siesta Key Beach, six miles southwest, has been rated the finest beach in the United States for its powder-white quartz sand that stays cool even in summer.

The Ringling — Museum of Art
John Ringling's personal art collection — 21 galleries of Old Masters, Baroque paintings, and tapestries assembled by the circus magnate who traveled Europe in the 1920s buying whatever he liked. The collection is legitimately significant: Rubens, Velázquez, El Greco, Cranach, and a monumental set of tapestry cartoons commissioned by Philip IV of Spain. The 21-gallery museum building itself is a 1929 Venetian Gothic structure overlooking Sarasota Bay; the courtyard holds a cast of Michelangelo's David and the best afternoon light in Sarasota.

Ca'd'Zan Mansion — The Ringling
John and Mable Ringling's winter home on Sarasota Bay — a 36-room Venetian Gothic palazzo completed in 1926, with a terrace that looks out over the bay toward the Gulf. The interior was designed to be both a showpiece and an actual home: Mable's bedroom in silk, John's in mahogany, the ballroom in hand-painted ceilings and carved woodwork, all furnished as they left it. Among the grandest private residences ever built in Florida.

St. Armands Circle
A circular shopping and dining district on Lido Key laid out by Ringling in 1926 along the lines of the Place Vendôme — boutiques, galleries, and restaurants arranged around a landscaped circular park with statuary. The afternoon energy is relaxed and well-dressed; the gelato at the circle is the right way to transition between the museum and the beach.

Columbia Restaurant — St. Armands
The St. Armands outpost of Tampa's legendary 1905-founded Spanish-Cuban institution — the 1905 salad prepared tableside, the Cuban sandwich, and the whole roasted snapper are the reasons to come. The flamenco dinner show on Friday and Saturday evenings is worth booking for.

Siesta Key Beach
The sand at Siesta Key is 99% pure quartz crystal ground from Appalachian rock by glaciers and deposited on Florida's Gulf Coast — it stays cool underfoot even in August heat that makes other beaches unbearable, and it is brilliantly white. The beach has been ranked the finest in the United States multiple times in both Dr. Beach's annual survey and TripAdvisor's traveler rankings. The water is warm, shallow, and Gulf-calm; arrive before 10am in season to get a parking space.

Lunch in Siesta Key Village — raw oysters, stone crab claws in season, and fresh Gulf fish in a lively open-air bar setting that draws everyone off the beach at noon. The outdoor seating under a canopy of palms is the right post-beach lunch.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens
A 15-acre bayfront garden on the southern end of downtown Sarasota — the world's foremost collection of epiphytic plants (bromeliads, orchids, and air plants), displayed in a landscape of banyan trees and tropical canopy that hangs directly over Sarasota Bay. The gardens are intimate and horticultural rather than themed; the rotating exhibitions in the museum space are typically excellent. The view from the bayfront lawn, with the water and the bridges beyond the bamboo grove, is the best in Sarasota.
