Forty-five minutes north of downtown, the desert rises into the boulder-strewn Sonoran foothills and two neighboring towns that couldn't be more different in temperament: polished, planned Carefree, with its shaded desert gardens and one of the world's largest sundials, and rowdy, ranch-rooted Cave Creek, where a dusty Old West main street of saloons, leather shops, and mining-era storefronts still feels like the frontier. This easygoing day pairs a slow morning among the sculptures and cactus of the Carefree Desert Gardens with an afternoon wandering Cave Creek's boardwalks, a walk in the wild high desert of Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, and a long, unhurried lunch on a saloon patio. It's a low-mileage, high-character escape — art and gardens on one end, wild burros and honky-tonk on the other.
