Carefree & Cave Creek — Desert Gardens, an Old West Main Street & a Patio Afternoon

Forty-five minutes north of downtown, the desert rises into the boulder-strewn Sonoran foothills and two neighboring towns that couldn't be more different in temperament: polished, planned Carefree, with its shaded desert gardens and one of the world's largest sundials, and rowdy, ranch-rooted Cave Creek, where a dusty Old West main street of saloons, leather shops, and mining-era storefronts still feels like the frontier. This easygoing day pairs a slow morning among the sculptures and cactus of the Carefree Desert Gardens with an afternoon wandering Cave Creek's boardwalks, a walk in the wild high desert of Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, and a long, unhurried lunch on a saloon patio. It's a low-mileage, high-character escape — art and gardens on one end, wild burros and honky-tonk on the other.

The heart of Carefree is a beautifully kept four-acre botanical garden threading through the town center, planted with mature saguaro, ocotillo, and desert wildflowers and dotted with fountains, ramadas, and rotating bronze sculpture. At its center stands the Carefree Sundial, built in 1959 and long billed as one of the largest sundials in the Western Hemisphere — its 62-foot gnomon angled to the polar axis, casting a shadow that genuinely keeps time. Paved, shaded, and flat, the gardens are made for an unhurried morning stroll with coffee. The adjacent Spanish Village, a small warren of art galleries and boutiques, is worth a wander when the shops open.

Cave Creek's mile-long stretch of Cave Creek Road is the last genuine Old West main street in the Phoenix area — a low-slung run of weathered wood storefronts, boot and leather shops, trading posts, and the town's famous biker-and-cowboy saloons. Founded as a gold-mining and cattle town in the 1870s, it never quite let go of the frontier, and horses are still tied up outside the bars on weekends. Browse the Frontier Town shops and the Cave Creek Museum, watch for the occasional gunfight reenactment, and soak up a place that trades entirely on its dusty, unpretentious character. Free to wander; most shops open late morning.

The Horny Toad Saloon Patio
The Horny Toad Saloon Patio
A Cave Creek institution since 1974, the Horny Toad is a rambling ranch-style saloon famous for its fried chicken, mesquite-grilled ribs, and cold beer served on a big shaded patio under the desert oaks. It's the archetypal Cave Creek lunch — loud, friendly, and thoroughly Western, with live music on many afternoons. Come hungry and settle in for a long, easy midday meal; this is the pace the whole day is built around.

Just north of town, Spur Cross Ranch protects 2,150 acres of some of the finest untouched high Sonoran Desert in Maricopa County — dense saguaro forest, a rare year-round creek lined with cottonwoods, and Hohokam archaeological sites tucked among the hills. The Spur Cross Trail is a gentle, mostly flat walk into the desert that can be as short or long as you like, with wildflowers in spring and the chance of deer, javelina, and the resident wild burros. A small day-use fee is collected at the trailhead. Bring water and a hat; there is little shade once you leave the creek bottom.

4.7
A charming afternoon-tea room set in Carefree's Spanish Village courtyard, serving proper scones, finger sandwiches, and pots of tea in a garden setting — a genteel counterpoint to the Cave Creek saloons and a pleasant way to wind down before the short drive home. Reservations are wise for the full tea service; walk-ins can usually grab dessert and a cold drink on the patio.
