Moraine State Park — Lake Arthur Sailing, the Bike Loop & the Wetlands

Just over an hour north of Pittsburgh lies one of the great conservation comeback stories in Pennsylvania: a landscape once ruined by coal mining and oil drilling, reclaimed and reflooded in the 1970s to recreate a glacial lake that vanished after the last Ice Age. Today Moraine State Park wraps around 3,225-acre Lake Arthur, a broad, island-dotted sheet of water that is the region's premier spot for sailing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. Ring the lake on a paved 7-mile bike trail, launch a boat from the marina, or drift the quiet coves of the northern wetlands where herons stalk and ospreys dive. It's an active, water-and-wheels day out, easy to reach and easy to love.

Lake Arthur is the beating heart of Moraine State Park and one of the best inland sailing waters in western Pennsylvania, its consistent open-water breezes drawing sailboats, catamarans, and windsurfers all summer. The South Shore marina rents kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, pontoons, and small sailboats by the hour, so no gear is required to get out on the water. With the lake capped at a wake-free horsepower limit, it stays calm and welcoming for paddlers even as sails skim across the middle. Launch early, when the water is glassy and the light is soft, and point toward the islands and coves that dot the far shore.

The park's guarded swimming beach on the south shore is a natural midday base — a broad sand crescent on the lake with shaded picnic pavilions, grills, and open lawn just behind it. It's the ideal place to dry off after a morning on the water, spread out a lunch, and let the group regroup before the afternoon bike loop. The gentle, sloping entry and calm water make it easy and relaxed. Restrooms, changing facilities, and boat-rental returns are all clustered here.

The North Country Brewing Co. (Slippery Rock)
A short hop from the park's north side toward Slippery Rock, this timber-framed brewpub is a regional favorite for a substantial midday meal — hand-crafted burgers, wood-fired dishes, and house-brewed ales in a rustic, barn-like space. It's the standout sit-down option near Moraine and an easy detour between water and wheels. If you'd rather stay in Butler or Portersville, both are minutes away with reliable diner and pizzeria fare.

The paved 7-mile bike trail along Lake Arthur's north shore is the park's premier land route — a smooth, mostly gentle ribbon that hugs the water past coves, meadows, and shaded woodland, with the lake in view for much of its length. Bikes can be rented at the seasonal concession near the north shore trailhead if you didn't bring your own, and the out-and-back can be scaled to whatever distance suits the group. Rolling but never punishing, it's a superb way to see the reclaimed shoreline and to spot waterfowl loafing in the quieter bays. Watch for the interpretive markers describing the park's remarkable restoration from mined land.

At the lake's upper end, the shallow, marshy inlets and restored wetlands are among the best bird-watching grounds in the region, cared for in partnership with local Audubon volunteers. Great blue herons stalk the shallows, ospreys and bald eagles hunt overhead, and in migration seasons the coves fill with ducks, grebes, and shorebirds. A short boardwalk and blind let you get close without disturbing the water. It's a quiet, low-effort counterpoint to the morning's paddling and the afternoon ride — bring binoculars and let the group slow down before the drive home.
