When Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, delegates from the loyal western counties gathered in the second-floor courtroom here across a series of conventions, rejected secession, and set in motion the creation of West Virginia — admitted to the Union in 1863 as the only state formed by seceding from a Confederate state. The restored courtroom, governor's office, and library are furnished to their wartime appearance, and the museum galleries trace the constitutional drama and the divided loyalties of the border. It is one of the most consequential and least-known historic sites in the region.

Wheeling Suspension Bridge
★ 4.4Spanning the main channel of the Ohio River to Wheeling Island, the Wheeling Suspension Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world when it opened in 1849, its 1,010-foot main span an engineering marvel by Charles Ellet Jr. that carried the National Road across the river and helped make Wheeling a gateway to the West.
