McMinnville: Wine Country & Aviation History

The largest wooden aircraft ever built — Howard Hughes's H-4 Hercules flying boat, wingspan 321 feet — occupies a purpose-built aviation museum in the Willamette Valley foothills. The Spruce Goose flew only once, on November 2, 1947, and was kept in flying condition by Hughes until his death in 1976. The museum's adjacent space gallery adds a Saturn V rocket, a SR-71 Blackbird, and a Titan II missile to a collection that covers the full arc of 20th-century aviation and space exploration.

McMinnville's Third Street preserves a remarkable concentration of late-19th-century brick commercial architecture — Italianate storefronts, corbeled cornices, and cast-iron facades from the 1880s through 1920s, now housing independent galleries, bookshops, and wine bars. The 1889 Yamhill County Courthouse two blocks off Third Street is one of the finest Romanesque Revival public buildings in Oregon, built of locally quarried sandstone with a four-faced clock tower visible from the valley floor.

Established in 1858 as McMinnville College by Baptist settlers on the Oregon Trail, Linfield is the second-oldest continuously operating university in Oregon. The tree-lined campus of brick Georgian Revival buildings clustered around the quad preserves an intact 19th-century academic landscape; Melrose Hall (1882) and the Pioneer Memorial Building anchor the historic core. The campus was the site of Oregon's first intercollegiate football game in 1893.

McMinnville's most celebrated dining room in a converted early-20th-century commercial building downtown — the kitchen produces Pacific Northwest seasonal cooking anchored by local produce from the surrounding Willamette Valley farms. The wine list leans heavily on Oregon Pinot; the cocktail program uses local spirits.
