Dundee Hills Pinot Country

The Dundee Hills are 30 minutes southwest of Portland and constitute one of the great wine landscapes of the American West — volcanic Jory soil, 600-foot hillsides, and Pinot Noir that shocked France in 1979. A day among the established estates and the newer family wineries covers the full range of what the appellation produces, bookended by the Newberg farmers market and a late lunch at the valley floor.

Robert Drouhin of Burgundy's Maison Joseph Drouhin built his Oregon winery in 1987 after the Eyrie Vineyards beaten his 1976 Chambolle-Musigny in a 1979 Paris tasting. The four-story gravity-flow winery on the Dundee Hills is the most architecturally elegant facility in the valley; the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay produced here are benchmarks of the Oregon-Burgundy dialogue that defines the appellation.

Dick and Nancy Ponzi planted their first vines in 1970 — among the earliest in the modern Oregon wine industry — and the family has maintained the estate through three generations. The Tavola tasting room in Dundee pours the full range alongside a food menu built around the surrounding valley's produce. The Reserve Pinot Noir shows the estate's founding block vines at their most expressive.

A certified organic and biodynamic estate on the Dundee Hills' southwest slope, with a hillside tasting room and a panoramic terrace overlook. Sokol Blosser was the first Oregon winery certified as a LEED Gold building; the Pinot Noir program emphasizes site-specific estate blocks, and the Dundee Hills Rosé has become the appellation's most recognizable summer wine.

Red Hills Market
A Dundee deli and wine bar in a converted building at the junction of Highway 99W and Worden Hill Road — the intersection where the Dundee Hills begins. The menu runs to wood-fired pizzas, charcuterie boards, and local produce; the wine list is a direct survey of the surrounding appellations, poured by the glass at winery prices. The best casual meal in Oregon wine country.
