Pocahontas State Park — CCC Lakes, Swift Creek Trails & the Mountain-Bike Network
Just half an hour south of Richmond, Pocahontas State Park is the largest state park in the region and the closest true wilderness to the capital — nearly 8,000 acres of loblolly-pine forest, hardwood bottomland, and blackwater creek carved by Swift Creek and its tributaries. The park's spine was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, whose crews dammed Swift Creek to form Beaver and Swift Creek Lakes and hand-laid the stone-and-timber infrastructure that still frames the park today. Beyond the CCC lakes lies one of the best mountain-bike trail systems in central Virginia — miles of purpose-built singletrack woven through the pines — alongside quiet hiking loops along the creek. This is a full day of accessible woodland trails, historic lakes, and singletrack riding, all within easy reach of home.
