Natural Bridge & the Upper James — a Limestone Arch, Cedar Creek & the Peaks of Otter Foothills
Two and a half hours west of Richmond, where the Great Valley meets the western foothills, the 215-foot limestone arch of Natural Bridge stands as one of the oldest tourist wonders in America — surveyed by a young George Washington and once owned by Thomas Jefferson. Day one walks beneath the arch and up the Cedar Creek gorge to Lace Falls, a mile-and-a-half of streamside trail beneath towering rock walls. Day two ranges into the surrounding highlands: the foothills below the Peaks of Otter, the wild ridgeline of the James River Face Wilderness, and the little James River town of Glasgow where the Maury River joins the main stem, before the drive home. Overnighting in the Natural Bridge and Lexington corridor puts historic inns, valley scenery, and early-morning trails within easy reach — all without ever setting a tire on the Blue Ridge Parkway itself.
