Cuyamaca Mountain Day: Summit Views, Waterfalls & Alpine Paddling

The Stonewall Peak Trail is the signature hike of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park — a 4-mile round trip (980 feet of elevation gain) that climbs through chaparral and mixed conifer forest to the bare granite summit at 5,730 feet, where a short section of iron handrails and stone steps assists on the final exposed granite scramble. The panoramic view from the summit is one of the most expansive available on a day hike from San Diego: on clear days you can see west to the Pacific Ocean and Coronado Islands, south toward Baja California, east across the Borrego Badlands to the Salton Sea, and north toward the San Bernardino Mountains. The summit itself is a classic example of the Peninsular Ranges batholith — a massive granitic intrusion that forms the backbone of the mountains from the San Jacinto range south into Baja — and the exposed boulder field at the top provides an excellent rest spot with lunch before the descent. Early morning departures (trailhead before 8 a.m.) catch the best light and the coolest temperatures.

Green Valley Falls, in the southern section of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park along the Sweetwater River, is one of the most family-accessible and rewarding short hikes in the park — an easy 2-mile round trip through riparian woodland of willows, cottonwoods, and native sycamores to a series of granite slab cascades and natural pools. The falls are most dramatic from December through April when the river runs high, but the shaded granite swimming holes are at their best for cooling off on a warm afternoon in May through October. The canyon microclimate drops temperatures by 10-15 degrees compared to the exposed ridgeline, making this an ideal midday rest after the summit hike.

Lake Cuyamaca sits at 4,600 feet elevation in a mountain meadow setting — the highest lake you can paddle in San Diego County, and one of the most serene. The 110-acre reservoir, stocked with rainbow trout, bass, and catfish, is surrounded by the Jeffrey pine and black oak forest of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and the boat rental concession provides kayaks, pedal boats, and rowboats for hourly rentals. Paddling on the still water with the Cuyamaca peaks reflected in the surface is a meditative end to an active mountain day. Fishing licenses are available at the concession, and the lake is stocked regularly by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
