Three Ecosystems in Three Days: Desert, Mountains & Ancient Forest
Three days of hiking spanning the most dramatic ecosystem transitions available from San Diego — the Borrego Badlands and Palm Canyon oasis of Anza-Borrego, the granite peaks and mountain lakes of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and the ancient cedar, fir, and black oak forests of Palomar Mountain State Park. Each day occupies a completely different ecological zone, and together they trace the full elevational and biological range of the Peninsular Ranges from 400 feet to over 6,000 feet.

Borrego Palm Canyon Trail
★ 4.8The 3-mile round trip Borrego Palm Canyon Trail is the perfect introduction to Anza-Borrego's dramatic desert ecology — a year-round stream feeds a grove of more than 1,000 California fan palms (Washingtonia filifera) deep in a steep granite canyon, creating a lush oasis that has drawn human visitors for thousands of years. The Kumeyaay people used the canyon as a seasonal camp and palm fruit source; Juan Bautista de Anza's 1774 expedition noted the palms when passing through the area. Arrive early for the best chance of spotting Peninsular bighorn sheep on the canyon walls.

Font's Point — Badlands Overlook
★ 4.9Font's Point delivers one of the most vertiginous and geologically spectacular overlooks in California — a 500-foot drop to the Borrego Badlands floor where millions of years of sedimentary deposits have been carved into a badlands landscape extending to the horizon. The formation holds some of the richest Pleistocene fossil deposits in North America. Reach it via 4-mile sandy wash (4WD required) or 4-mile round-trip hike. The late afternoon light transforms the formations from ochre to deep copper in a continuous color show that makes Font's Point one of Southern California's premier sunset destinations.

La Casa del Zorro Desert Resort
La Casa del Zorro, Borrego Springs' most historic resort since 1937, offers casita accommodations across 42 acres of desert gardens with outstanding dark sky conditions for stargazing. The Butterfield Room serves the town's most complete dinner menu, and the pool area is an ideal recovery stop after the day's desert hiking.

Stonewall Peak Summit Trail
★ 4.9Stonewall Peak (5,730 ft) rises dramatically from the valley floor of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, and the 4-mile round-trip trail gains nearly 1,000 feet through increasingly open Jeffrey pine forest before topping out on bare granite with iron handrails assisting the final exposed scramble. The elevation change between yesterday's desert hiking near 400 feet and today's mountain summit at 5,730 feet — only 60 miles apart — illustrates the extraordinary topographic compression of the Peninsular Ranges.

Julian Pie Company
A slice of apple pie in Julian mid-hike weekend is a mandatory ritual — the Julian Pie Company's fresh-baked apple pies are the town's most famous export, and eating one on the front porch of the bakery on Main Street, watching the mountain community go about its business, is one of the most pleasant breaks a San Diego hiker can take.

William Heise County Park — Cedar Trail
★ 4.7William Heise County Park, just minutes from Julian, offers afternoon hiking through Coulter pine and California black oak woodland at 4,200 feet with the trails quiet after the morning rush. The Cedar Trail and Manzanita Loop combined form a 3-mile circuit through the park's most varied terrain, including a section through a dense stand of incense cedars that creates a cathedral-like canopy with filtered mountain light and the sharp resinous scent of cedar bark warming in the afternoon sun.

Doane Valley Nature Trail — Palomar Mountain State Park
The Doane Valley Nature Trail in Palomar Mountain State Park is a 1-mile interpretive loop through one of the finest old-growth mixed conifer forests in Southern California — a community of incense cedar, big-cone Douglas fir, California black oak, and ponderosa pine, with individual trees estimated at over 500 years old and trunks reaching 5-6 feet in diameter. The trail passes Doane Pond, a small reservoir surrounded by willows and sedges that provides year-round water for the park's diverse wildlife including mule deer, acorn woodpeckers, and western tanagers. The forest atmosphere on Palomar Mountain — the combination of ancient trees, fern understory, and the cool marine air trapped by the mountain's elevation — feels more like the Pacific Northwest than Southern California.

Upper Doane Valley Trail
The Upper Doane Valley Trail extends the Doane Valley loop into the more remote northern section of the park, following Doane Creek upstream through old-growth forest to the upper meadow system where the creek originates in a series of seeps and springs beneath the tallest trees on the mountain. The upper meadow in late spring supports a remarkable wildflower display, and the forest canopy here is the densest on Palomar — the combination of incense cedar, white fir, and black oak creates a multi-story canopy that filters the mountain light into something more like dusk at midday.

Mother's Kitchen — Palomar Mountain
Mother's Kitchen at the summit of Palomar Mountain is a beloved institution serving basic burgers, sandwiches, and hot drinks at simple outdoor tables shaded by ancient oaks. The café has been feeding hikers and observatory visitors for decades, and its location at 5,500 feet with views of the marine layer far below the mountain gives any meal here a slightly otherworldly quality.

Palomar Observatory — Hale Telescope Tour
★ 4.6Cap the three-day circuit with a visit to the Palomar Observatory's 200-inch Hale Telescope dome, open for self-guided tours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The 530-ton telescope structure — completed in 1949 after 20 years of construction and the largest optical telescope in the world for 27 years — is an awe-inspiring piece of mid-century scientific engineering. The catwalk tour allows visitors to walk around the telescope tube beneath the dome, and the Greenway Museum in the visitor center tells the full story of the observatory's construction and the quasars, galaxies, and supernovae it has revealed.
