Mission San Juan Capistrano & San Juan Capistrano Historic District

An hour north of San Diego on the Old Mission Road, Mission San Juan Capistrano is the most romantically ruined of the California missions — the Great Stone Church, destroyed in the 1812 earthquake and never rebuilt, left a roofless nave whose arched stone walls now frame the sky. The mission was founded in 1776 by Junipero Serra; the Serra Chapel (1782) is the oldest building in California still in continuous use. The town of San Juan Capistrano around the mission has preserved the most intact Spanish colonial streetscape in Southern California — the Los Rios Historic District (1794–1880) contains the largest concentration of historic adobes in the state.

Mission San Juan Capistrano
4.8
The most romantically preserved California mission — founded in 1776, and partially destroyed by the 1812 Wrightwood earthquake that collapsed the vaulted Great Stone Church after only six years of use. The roofless stone nave (still visible with its three surviving arched walls) is the most dramatic architectural ruin in California. The Serra Chapel (1782) is the oldest California building in continuous use; Mass is celebrated here every Sunday. The swallows of San Juan Capistrano — cliff swallows that nest in the mission ruins and return annually on March 19 (St. Joseph's Day) — are the most famous wildlife event in Southern California.

The oldest neighborhood in California — Los Rios Street (one block from the mission) is a residential street lined with adobes, cottages, and wooden Victorian houses from the 1790s through the 1880s. The Silvas Adobe (1794) is the oldest private home in California; the Rios Adobe (1794) and the O'Neill Museum (in an 1870s Victorian) are the primary public-access sites. The Ramos House Café on Los Rios Street is the best brunch restaurant in Orange County.

The commercial historic district of San Juan Capistrano around the 1894 Santa Fe Depot — the Montanez Adobe (1794), the Egan House (1881), and the Capistrano Depot restaurant (in the restored train station) complete the historic district. The shops along Camino Capistrano carry antiques, local crafts, and the specialty food stores unique to the Orange County agricultural heritage.
