The Goat Cliff Trail is the classic ascent — a steady switchback climb past exposed rock and hill-prairie openings — that links to the Ridge and Bluff trails and a string of named overlooks: McAdams Peak, Twin Springs, and the Lookout, each framing a different reach of the braided river and its wooded islands. A full loop runs roughly 3 miles with real elevation gain. Wear grippy shoes; the rock steps can be slick, and the drops from the overlooks are genuine.

★ 4.3Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s from local stone and massive timber, the Pere Marquette Lodge is one of the great rustic public buildings of the Midwest. Its Great Room soars around a 700-ton stone fireplace rising 50 feet to the beamed ceiling, and a giant hand-carved chess set sits ready by the hearth. Even if you're not staying the night, it's worth stepping inside to warm up after the trails and to appreciate the craftsmanship — the lobby, sunroom, and grounds are open to visitors and make an atmospheric mid-afternoon pause before the river drive.

Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway & Eagle Watching
The Great River Road — here the Meeting of the Great Rivers Scenic Byway — hugs the base of the towering limestone bluffs between Grafton and Alton, with the wide Mississippi on one side and sheer rock on the other, and it saves the best of the day for the drive home. Pull-offs along the route look out over the confluence of the Illinois and Mississippi, and in the low golden light the bluffs glow warm above the water. From late fall through winter this stretch is prime bald-eagle country: the birds gather in the riverside cottonwoods and dive for fish in the open channels below the dams, and the pull-offs double as eagle-watching stops. Time the drive for late afternoon to catch the light on the rock before turning south to St. Louis.
