Harpers Ferry & the Maryland Heights Ridge

The lower town preserves the buildings where abolitionist John Brown seized the federal arsenal on October 16, 1859 — an event that accelerated the Civil War's onset. The NPS maintains 22 historic structures on three streets, including the firehouse where Brown made his final stand. The town sits at the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers at 247 feet elevation, with Virginia, Maryland, and West Virginia meeting within view of the hilltop Jefferson Rock.

A well-regarded craft brewery in the historic district with river-view seating and a rotating tap list anchored by their Potomac Porter and Shenandoah IPA. The kitchen turns out smoked meats and elevated pub food that pairs well with the post-hike reward mentality. The outdoor patio fills fast on weekend afternoons.

The 4.4-mile Maryland Heights circuit gains 1,400 feet through a mixed hardwood forest before breaking onto the open basalt cap above Harpers Ferry. The stone fortifications at the summit were built by Union troops in 1862 and capture the strategic logic of this position immediately — the view commands both river valleys and all three states. The final 0.8-mile descent past the Naval Battery ruins is the steepest and most dramatic section.
