Whiteoak Canyon Trail
★ 4.9The Whiteoak Canyon trail descends 2,600 feet through a hemlock-shaded hollow to visit six named waterfalls, the largest of which — Whiteoak Falls — drops 86 feet in a single curtain over a quartzite ledge. The 7.8-mile loop combines the canyon descent with the Cedar Run Trail return, passing through old-growth hemlocks that are among the largest in Shenandoah. The route from the Cedar Run trailhead adds significant elevation change; arrive early in summer as the parking area fills by 9am on weekends.

Skyland Resort Dining Room
★ 4.1Shenandoah National Park's highest lodge at 3,680 feet, near mile 41.7 of Skyline Drive. The dining room serves a full lunch and dinner menu with ridge-side views across the Shenandoah Valley. Originally a private camp built by George Pollock in 1894, Skyland became NPS accommodation after the park's establishment in 1935. A reliable midday stop between Whiteoak Canyon and the evening drive to Luray.

Cedar Run — Lower Falls
★ 4.7If the loop wasn't completed in the morning, the lower Cedar Run falls — a series of cascade pools in a boulder-choked gorge — are accessible via a 3.6-mile out-and-back from the Cedar Run trailhead. The pools below the lower falls are among the few places in Shenandoah where swimming is both legal and genuinely inviting. The trail gains 1,340 feet on the return, so allow more time than the mileage suggests.

Evening
Gathering Grounds Cafe — Luray
★ 4.6A well-regarded Luray cafe and dinner spot serving farm-sourced Shenandoah Valley food in a relaxed setting — seasonal soups, sandwiches, and local specials that rotate with the growing calendar. A grounded alternative to the tourist restaurants clustered near Luray Caverns. Popular with hikers from the park's east-side trailheads.

Mimslyn Inn — Luray
A 1931 colonial revival inn on a hilltop above Luray with views of the Massanutten Mountain ridge. The 45 rooms mix period furnishings with modern amenities, and the Circa 31 restaurant serves a farm-focused menu for dinner. Positioned 25 minutes from the Old Rag trailhead, making it the ideal base for an early-morning summit attempt.

Old Rag Mountain
★ 4.9The 8.8-mile Old Rag circuit is one of the most demanding and rewarding day hikes in the entire Appalachian chain. The summit ridge scramble covers nearly a mile of bare granite boulders requiring hands and feet — fixed chains assist on the steepest moves. At 3,291 feet, the top delivers 360-degree views across the Piedmont, the Shenandoah Valley, and on clear days the distant Blue Ridge layers stacking south into North Carolina. The NPS implemented a timed-entry permit system to manage demand; reserve well in advance for spring and fall weekends.

Sperryville Village Green Food Truck Pod
★ 4.7The small artisan village of Sperryville at the foot of Old Rag has developed a small cluster of excellent food options. Pen Druid Brewing operates a farmhouse brewery here, and the Thornton River Grille serves solid post-hike meals. The drive through Sperryville itself, with its antique dealers and studio galleries, is a pleasant decompression after the mountain.
