Charlottesville: Jefferson's Vision & Virginia Wine

Thomas Jefferson designed Monticello over 40 years (1768–1809), drawing on Palladio's I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura and his own observations during his 1784–1789 Paris posting as Minister to France. The result is the most architecturally sophisticated private house built in America before 1850 — the skylights, alcove beds, and dumbwaiter system reflect a lifelong obsession with design innovation. The Mountaintop tours now integrate the story of the enslaved community that built and operated the plantation: 607 people were enslaved at Monticello over the course of Jefferson's lifetime. UNESCO listed Monticello as a World Heritage Site in 1987.

The 8-block pedestrian mall on Main Street is one of the finest such spaces in the American South — a 1970s urban design success story that has retained independent retail, restaurants, and cultural institutions (the Paramount Theater, the Virginia Film Festival) while nearby malls have declined. The lunch options are exceptional: South Street Brewery for local ales, The Fitzroy for upscale British pub food, and Lampo for Neapolitan pizza that has attracted national attention.

Jefferson designed the UVA campus — he called it the Academical Village — between 1817 and 1826, and considered it one of his three greatest achievements alongside the Declaration of Independence and the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. The Rotunda (based on the Roman Pantheon at half scale) anchors the Lawn, a green rectangle flanked by 10 pavilions connected by colonnaded walkways. Edgar Allan Poe occupied Room 13 on the West Range in 1826. The Rotunda was fully restored in 2016 after decades of alterations.

Founded in 1976 on land granted to Governor James Barbour by the Virginia legislature in 1814, Barboursville is the winery most responsible for establishing Virginia as a serious wine region. The estate grows Bordeaux and Italian varieties on 900 acres, and the Octagon — their flagship Bordeaux blend — consistently earns scores in the low-to-mid 90s. The ruins of the 1814 Barbour mansion (designed by Jefferson, destroyed by fire on Christmas Day 1884) anchor the picnic grounds.
