Luray Caverns & Shenandoah Valley

Discovered in August 1878 by local tinsmith Andrew Campbell, Luray Caverns is the largest cavern system in the eastern United States — 64 acres of passages with ceilings reaching 10 stories. The Great Stalacpipe Organ, installed in 1956 by mathematician Leland Sprinkle over 3.5 years of tuning, uses solenoid mallets to strike 37 stalactites spanning 3.5 acres of cave, producing tones of unusual purity and resonance. The Garden of Eden chamber and the Dream Lake — a perfectly still, glass-like pool that reflects the cavern ceiling so precisely the reflection looks deeper than the actual water — are the most visited features.

The menu changes with Shenandoah Valley seasonality — summer corn dishes, fall squash preparations, trout from the local hatcheries — and the pie program is legitimately excellent. A comfortable midday stop that doesn't feel like a tourist trap despite the proximity.

The Shenandoah River State Park in Bentonville preserves 1,670 acres of river floodplain and bluff above the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. The 5.7-mile Massanutten Mountain loop offers Shenandoah Valley panoramas without the Skyline Drive crowds; the river access points are ideal for a lazy afternoon float in canoes or kayaks available from Front Royal outfitters 15 minutes north.

A well-regarded Mexican restaurant in downtown Luray that draws a strong local following and has won the loyalty of the through-traffic between DC and the Shenandoah. The chile verde, mole enchiladas, and house margaritas are consistently strong. A reliably good dinner before the drive home.
