Hunt Country & Cavern: Virginia's Unhurried West

Middleburg was platted in 1787 on a cousin of George Washington's land. The National Sporting Library & Museum, opened in 2007, houses 20,000 volumes on equestrian and field sports — a specialized collection of international significance. The 18-block grid of Federal and Victorian commercial buildings on Washington and Federal Streets gives the town a compact, walkable character unusual in rural Virginia.

In continuous operation since 1728 — one of the oldest taverns in America. The stone-floored tavern room served Civil War cavalrymen and JFK-era fox hunters; Jacqueline Kennedy used it as her regular dining room while the First Family kept horses at nearby Glen Ora (1961–63). The kitchen serves Virginia country cooking: game, roasted meats, and Chesapeake seafood alongside a wine list that favors the local producers.

One of Virginia's oldest wineries, established in 1973 by Elizabeth Furness on a 37-acre Middleburg estate. The Chardonnay was the first Virginia wine to win a national competition (Atlanta, 1979) and the winery has maintained its focus on Burgundy varieties while much of the Virginia industry shifted toward Bordeaux reds. The tasting room in the original winery building has the lived-in character of a place that has been at this seriously for 50 years.

A 340-acre equestrian resort in the heart of Middleburg hunt country, opened in 2013. The spa uses local ingredients — Shenandoah Valley lavender, Blue Ridge clay — in its treatments. The Harrimans Virginia Piedmont Grill serves the region's best farm-to-table dinner. The stable program can arrange a morning trail ride before departing for Luray.

Discovered in 1937, Skyline Caverns near Front Royal are famous for their rare anthodites — spiky aragonite crystal formations called 'cave flowers' found in only three caves worldwide. The 30-minute guided tour follows Mirror Lake (an underground reflecting pool) through formations found nowhere else in the Shenandoah Valley.

Front Royal is the northern gateway to Shenandoah National Park and the put-in point for the river's most popular float sections. The South Fork of the Shenandoah from Front Royal downstream to Bentonville is a 10-mile beginner-friendly float through cow pastures and limestone ledges, with eagles overhead and box turtles on every log. Shenandoah River Outfitters operates full-day canoe rentals from a basecamp on the river.
