Chesapeake Circuit: Bay, Shore & Maritime Maryland

Annapolis's City Dock has been a working harbor since 1649 and remains one of the most active small-boat anchorages on the East Coast. Ego Alley — the narrow channel running inland from the dock — is so named because sailboat owners parade through it to be seen. The morning scene includes commercial watermen selling crabs from their boats alongside pleasure craft owners getting coffee. The Maryland Inn across the dock has been operating since 1782.

At the western foot of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, Sandy Point has a 2-mile beach on the open Bay, a fishing pier extending 900 feet into the main channel, and a boat launch with views of the iconic 4.3-mile twin-span bridge. The beach gets crowded on summer weekends but the northern end near the jetty offers relative quiet and exceptional views of Bay traffic — container ships, tankers, and the last working log canoe racers in America.

An Annapolis institution since 1921 in a converted Victorian row house on Duke of Gloucester Street. The dry-aged steaks, the creamed spinach, and the unchanged room — white tablecloths, wooden booths, framed memorabilia — make this one of the most reliably satisfying dinner experiences in the mid-Atlantic. Reservations essential.

Oxford is one of Maryland's oldest towns — a colonial tobacco port established in 1683 that was once the second-busiest port in the Chesapeake, before its harbor silted and Annapolis overtook it. The town's slow decline preserved its 18th-century street grid and waterfront character almost entirely intact. The Oxford-Bellevue Ferry, operating since 1683, is the oldest privately operated ferry in the United States, crossing the Tred Avon River to the Bellevue landing in four minutes — the most civilized possible way to arrive on the Eastern Shore.

Built circa 1710 by ships' carpenters using paneling from sailing vessels, the Robert Morris Inn is the oldest lodging on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The dining room's crab cakes — made from a recipe that has not changed in decades — are among the most cited benchmark preparations of the Chesapeake's signature dish. The paneled dining room with its fireplace and the screened porch overlooking the Tred Avon are equally worthy settings for the meal.

The 28,000-acre Blackwater refuge on the Blackwater River's tidal marshes south of Cambridge is one of the most important waterfowl wintering grounds on the Atlantic Flyway — at peak migration (late October through November), the refuge supports 35,000 Canada geese and 15,000 ducks simultaneously. The 4-mile Wildlife Drive loops through tidal impoundments and pine forest, and bald eagles are visible year-round — the Chesapeake Bay watershed has the highest eagle concentration in the lower 48 states, and Blackwater has one of the densest nesting populations on the entire East Coast.

A Cambridge waterfront restaurant serving Eastern Shore seafood with a more contemporary sensibility than the area's traditional crab houses — rockfish preparations, oyster flights, and seasonal vegetable dishes alongside the expected crab. The dining room overlooks Cambridge Creek and the restored waterfront that has been gradually revitalized through a state heritage tourism program.

Chesapeake Beach was developed in 1898 by Colorado railroad developer Otto Mears as a planned resort city on the Bay's western shore — envisioned as a rival to Atlantic City, complete with a casino, roller coaster, and hotel. The railroad he built to carry Washingtonians to the beach closed in 1935 when car culture made it obsolete, and the original 1898 station building is now the Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum, documenting the resort's ambitious and ultimately unsuccessful history.

A Calvert County park on the Bay's western shore preserving 327 acres of beach, forest, and pond habitat. The 0.75-mile trail to the beach descends through old-growth beech forest to a Bay shoreline where the Calvert Cliffs formation — 600-foot fossil beds formed 10–20 million years ago — is actively eroding into the water, depositing shark teeth, ray plates, and whale bone fragments directly onto the beach. Fossil hunting here is legal and productive.
