Ghost Ranch — Chimney Rock Trail

The Chimney Rock Trail climbs about 600 feet from the ranch to a mesa-top overlook, delivering a sweeping panorama over the Piedra Lumbre basin, the Rio Chama, and the layered cliffs — some of the most iconic scenery in the Southwest, and the setting for many of O'Keeffe's most famous works. The Box Canyon and Kitchen Mesa trails offer alternatives if you want more or less climbing. Start in the cooler morning; the trails are exposed with little shade, and the colors are richest in the low, slanting light. Abiquiu Lake & the Rio Chama Overlook
★ 4.7Just south of Ghost Ranch, Abiquiu Lake fills a red-rock basin behind a dam on the Rio Chama, its blue water set against the flat-topped bulk of Cerro Pedernal — the distinctive volcanic mesa O'Keeffe painted so often that she joked God would give it to her if she painted it enough. The overlook at the dam and the trails around the lakeshore offer a final sweep of the Rio Chama country, with Pedernal on the skyline and the river winding below. It is a scenic, low-effort last stop to soak in the landscape before turning south toward Albuquerque. From here the highway follows the Rio Chama and then the Rio Grande most of the way home.
