North Georgia Mountain Ramble: Gold, Wine, Rails & Orchards

The estate has won international recognition for its Cabernet Franc and sparkling wines — including the hand-riddled Blanc de Blanc that has placed against top American sparkling producers in blind competitions. The stone tasting room commands panoramic views across Lumpkin County toward the Blue Ridge, and the unhurried tasting experience — emphasizing wine education as much as sales — makes Wolf Mountain one of the most rewarding stops in the North Georgia wine country.

Montaluce Winery is a Tuscan-inspired estate at 1,900 feet in the North Georgia mountains outside Dahlonega, and its Le Vigne restaurant is the most elegant dining experience in the Dahlonega wine country. The Italian-influenced seasonal menu emphasizes local ingredients paired with Montaluce's estate wines — including the Sangiovese and Vermentino planted on the hillside estate. The Blue Ridge Scenic Railway operates from the historic 1905 Blue Ridge Depot through the Toccoa River valley to McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee — the twin cities straddling the state line at the Tennessee border. The 26-mile round-trip journey takes approximately three hours, passing through dense hardwood forest, along the Toccoa River's clear, rushing shoals, and across river bridges on vintage diesel-powered trains operated on the historic Louisville and Nashville Railroad right-of-way. The train stops in McCaysville and Copperhill for 90 minutes, allowing passengers to explore the twin-cities main street, browse local shops, and find lunch before the return trip. The surrounding Toccoa River valley landscape is some of the most scenic and least-developed terrain in North Georgia — a corridor of second-growth forest and mountain farmland largely unchanged from the railroad's original operating era. The railway operates from March through December on weekends and select weekdays; advance reservations are strongly recommended.

Local outfitters rent kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards from the Blue Ridge Marina; the lake's numerous coves and forested inlets make for peaceful paddling with the Blue Ridge Mountains visible in all directions above the treeline. Fishing for largemouth bass, trout, walleye, and musky draws year-round anglers to the lake's cold, well-oxygenated water. Even without a watercraft, the lakeside parks and access points provide pleasant afternoon destinations for picnicking and mountain views.

Blue Ridge's walkable downtown has the relaxed, independent character of a mountain community that has grown gradually rather than being built for tourism from scratch. The main street mixes independent galleries, breweries, boutique shops, and local restaurants in a compact area easily covered on foot. The Mercier Orchards farm store on the edge of town stocks fresh apples, cider, and orchard products throughout the growing season, and the Old Toccoa Farm area just south of town offers scenic pastoral scenery along the river for a late-afternoon drive or walk before settling in for the evening.

Ellijay is the self-proclaimed Apple Capital of Georgia — Gilmer County produces approximately 600,000 bushels of apples annually, more than any other county in the Southeast, a tradition dating to the early 19th century when settlers found the mountain climate and acidic granitic soil ideal for apple cultivation. R&A Orchards, established in the 1930s, and Hillcrest Orchards are the two most celebrated destinations in the area: both offer pick-your-own apple orchards in season from August through November, fresh-pressed unpasteurized apple cider, apple butter, homemade jams and preserves, and the essential fresh-fried apple cider donuts — made to order in the orchard kitchen, rolled in cinnamon sugar, and consumed within minutes of frying while still warm and crackling at the edges. More than thirty apple varieties ripen at different times from early summer through late fall; Honey Crisp and Fuji are the most popular, but the variety of heirloom and heritage apples at a serious Georgia orchard is considerably more interesting than any grocery store experience. The drive along Georgia Highway 52 past the orchards terraced on hillsides above the Ellijay River is one of the most purely pastoral pleasures in the North Georgia mountains.

Ellijay's compact historic downtown along the Ellijay River has breweries, antique shops, and local restaurants within easy walking distance. The confluence of the Ellijay and Cartecay Rivers forming the Coosawattee is a short distance downstream, and the river walk through town provides a pleasant midday stroll. Ellijay Brewing Company has become a local institution since opening, drawing a community of both residents and weekend visitors to its covered patio overlooking the river.

Carter's Lake is the deepest lake in Georgia at 450 feet — a 3,200-acre Corps of Engineers reservoir created by Carters Dam on the Coosawattee River, completed in 1977. Unlike virtually every other Corps of Engineers lake in the Southeast, Carter's Lake has been kept almost entirely undeveloped: the Corps controls approximately 98% of the shoreline, which is buffered by the Chattahoochee National Forest and the Cohutta Wilderness to the north. The result is a lake that feels more like a mountain reservoir in a western national park than a typical Georgia recreational lake — no private docks, no strip of lake houses, no jet ski concessions disrupting the quiet. The day-use recreation areas offer swimming beaches, kayak launches, and fishing access in surroundings of unusual natural integrity; the ridgelines of the Cohutta Wilderness visible to the north are some of the most remote terrain in the eastern United States. The silence and wild-feeling scenery make Carter's Lake one of the most restorative destinations in North Georgia for visitors who have spent two days in mountain towns.
