Covered Bridge Country — Blount County's Wooden Spans & Clifftop Park
Just forty minutes north of Birmingham, Blount County holds the greatest concentration of historic covered bridges in Alabama — a rural landscape of red-dirt back roads, wooded creek crossings, and one of the state's most surprising clifftop parks. This unhurried day loops between the three surviving wooden spans: Horton Mill Bridge, perched a dizzying seventy feet above Calvert Prospect Creek; Swann Bridge, one of the longest in the state at 324 feet; and the quiet Easley Bridge tucked on a country lane. Between bridges the route climbs to Palisades Park, where sandstone bluffs open onto a wide view across the valley, and rolls through the small courthouse town of Oneonta for a relaxed Southern lunch. Horton Mill Covered Bridge
★ 4.8Built in 1934 to replace an earlier span, Horton Mill Covered Bridge is the highest covered bridge above any waterway in the United States, crossing Calvert Prospect Creek some seventy feet below. Its lattice-truss timbers and weathered gray shingles frame a dramatic gorge cloaked in hardwood forest, and a short footpath drops down toward the creek for anglers and waders. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is the most photographed of Blount County's bridges and the natural first stop of the loop. Come early, when morning light slants through the wooden portal and the gorge below is still cool and quiet.

Short, easy trails run along the clifftop between rock outcrops popular with local climbers, and restored pioneer log cabins scattered through the grounds add a folk-history layer to the walk. Picnic pavilions and open lawns make it an ideal place to stretch out before lunch. The overlook is free, gentle to reach, and delivers an outsized payoff for very little effort — the signature panorama of the day.

Swann Covered Bridge
★ 4.7Spanning the Locust Fork of the Black Warrior River at 324 feet, Swann Covered Bridge is one of the longest covered bridges in Alabama, its three lattice-truss sections resting on tall stone piers above a broad, rocky river. Built in 1933, it carries a quiet country road and remains open to careful vehicle traffic, so you can drive slowly through its timbered tunnel or park and walk the riverbank below. The wide gravel bars and clear water make it a favorite spot for wading and photographs in warm months. Its scale and setting on the river give it a very different character from the high, narrow gorge at Horton Mill.

Easley Covered Bridge
★ 4.8The quietest of the three surviving spans, Easley Covered Bridge is a modest 95-foot crossing over Dub Branch on a sleepy country lane southeast of Oneonta. Built around 1927, its simple lattice trusses and tin roof sit low over a gentle creek in a shaded hollow, with none of the crowds or drama of its taller cousins — just the ticking calm of the countryside and the smell of old timber. It makes a fitting final bridge, a place to linger a few minutes in the late-afternoon light before pointing back toward Birmingham. Easy to miss and all the more rewarding for it.
