Cahaba Iron Country — Tannehill Furnaces & the Rickwood Miracle Mile

A single day that pairs the birthplace of Alabama's iron industry with one of the oldest caves in the country, both within an easy half-hour of Birmingham. Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park preserves the towering sandstone furnaces that fed the Confederate war effort until Union raiders destroyed them in 1865, now ringed by shaded creekside trails and a working gristmill. From there it is a short hop north to Rickwood Caverns, where a guided walk down the 'Miracle Mile' descends 175 feet into limestone chambers formed 260 million years ago, past blind cave fish and an underground pool. The day is built for walking — furnace ruins and mill-race trails in the morning, cool cavern passages in the afternoon — and anchored by a hearty Bessemer barbecue lunch between the two.
