Two and a half hours southeast, on the Chattahoochee River at the Alabama-Georgia line, Columbus rewards three unhurried days. Day one takes in the monumental National Infantry Museum at Fort Moore and the reborn downtown RiverWalk, where the world's longest urban whitewater course now runs through the old textile-mill dams. Day two lingers in the antebellum historic district, the 1871 Springer Opera House, and the river itself, whether from the whitewater or the pedestrian bridge into Phenix City. In 2012 Columbus removed two aging dams to unleash a 2.5-mile run of free-flowing Chattahoochee through downtown, creating what is billed as the longest urban whitewater course in the world. Rafting and kayak outfitters launch trips through Class III-IV rapids that roll right past the old mills, while the Blue Heron and 14th Street pedestrian bridges let you cross the river on foot into Phenix City, Alabama — a rare chance to walk between two states over churning whitewater. Even without getting wet, watching the rapids from the RiverWalk is a fine way to spend the late afternoon. A zip line also spans the gorge for the adventurous.

The result is one of the state's great natural spectacles: a three-mile rim trail overlooks the canyon system, while a canyon-floor loop lets you walk right into the soft, sandy gullies between the towering pastel walls. A rare wildflower, the plumleaf azalea, blooms here in summer, and the interpretive center explains how ruinous agriculture accidentally created a place of such strange beauty. Wear shoes you don't mind getting muddy for the canyon-floor route.
