Cohutta Wilderness — Jacks River Falls, Georgia's Highest Lake & Backcountry Cascades

The Cohutta Wilderness is the largest tract of protected mountain wilderness in Georgia, a rugged 37,000-acre expanse of the southern Blue Ridge about ninety minutes southeast of Chattanooga where the rivers run wild and unbridged. Day one drops into the wilderness on the Beech Bottom Trail to reach Jacks River Falls, a broad two-tiered cascade churning into a deep swimming pool at the heart of the backcountry. Day two climbs the eastern rim for the long Cohutta overlook, visits Lake Conasauga — the highest lake in Georgia, cradled in spruce and hardwood near 3,150 feet — and finishes at the boulder-strewn Emery Creek Falls before the drive home. It is a wilder, less-trodden alternative to the plateau parks, with nights in the mountain hamlets of Cisco and Chatsworth.

Beech Bottom Trail
The Beech Bottom Trail is the gentlest way into the Cohutta backcountry and the standard approach to Jacks River Falls. An old roadbed reached by a rough gravel drive above Cisco, it contours some 3.6 miles through hardwood forest and along ridgelines with only modest elevation change, making it a moderate rather than punishing route into true wilderness. Wildflowers carpet the bottoms in spring and the canopy is deep and cool in summer. There is no cell service and no bridges ahead, so carry all your water, tell someone your plan, and give yourself the full day for the round trip to the falls and back.

Jacks River Falls is the jewel of the Cohutta Wilderness — a broad, two-tiered cascade where the full flow of the Jacks River drops perhaps eighty feet over stepped bedrock into a wide, deep pool ringed by boulders and hemlock. Because it can only be reached on foot, deep in the backcountry, it rewards the effort with a sense of genuine remoteness rare this close to a city. In summer the pool is a superb, if bracing, swimming hole; sun-warmed boulders make a natural lunch spot. The river is powerful and the rock is slick — stay well clear of the lip and pick careful lines around the base.

For those with energy left after the falls, the Jacks River Trail heads downstream through the gorge, immediately entering the wilderness's signature terrain of repeated river fords through cold, clear water. Even a short out-and-back gives a taste of why the Cohutta is legendary among Southeastern backpackers — the trail simply crosses the river again and again with no bridges, threading old-growth pockets and mossy boulders. Wade only if the water is low and calm; turn back well before you are tired, because the climb out on Beech Bottom awaits. Then retrace the trail to the trailhead for the drive to Cisco.

Cohutta Lodge or Chatsworth Inn
The Cohutta Wilderness has no lodging inside its boundary, so the night is spent in the small mountain towns on its western edge. Chatsworth, about thirty minutes down the mountain, offers the fullest range of dependable chain hotels and a handful of local diners for dinner. For a more scenic base, the Cohutta Lodge atop Fort Mountain sits on the ridge between the wilderness and Carters Lake with mountain views and a restaurant on-site. Either puts you within an easy morning drive of tomorrow's climb up the eastern rim to Lake Conasauga.

The gravel Forest Service road climbs steadily to nearly 3,500 feet on the eastern shoulder of the Cohutta range, and the overlook near Grassy Mountain opens onto a vast sweep of the wilderness you walked into yesterday — ridge upon forested ridge falling away toward the Jacks River gorge and the Tennessee line. From the Lake Conasauga campground a short trail leads to the Grassy Mountain fire tower vista for the highest and widest panorama on the mountain. The high-elevation forest here is cool and northern in feel, with rhododendron thickets and spruce mixed among the hardwoods. It is a rewarding, easy leg to start the second day up in the sky.

At roughly 3,150 feet, Lake Conasauga is the highest lake in Georgia — a small, clear, spring-fed pool cradled in high hardwood and hemlock forest at the top of the Cohutta range, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. A flat, family-friendly lakeshore trail rings the water in about a mile, passing a swim beach, quiet fishing coves, and a boggy meadow rich in birds. The air is noticeably cooler than the valley below and the setting feels far removed from anywhere. It makes an ideal midday base for a picnic and a swim before dropping back down the mountain to Emery Creek.

Down on the western flank of the Cohuttas, the Emery Creek Trail climbs through a lush hardwood cove to a series of cascades culminating in the tall, boulder-framed Emery Creek Falls. The route crosses the creek several times on rock-hops that can be wet in high water, so save this for a low-flow afternoon and bring shoes you don't mind soaking. The reward is a quiet, mossy cascade far from any crowd, tumbling through a green defile — a fitting, unhurried finale to two days in Georgia's wildest mountains before turning north for Chattanooga.

Back in Chatsworth at the mountain's foot, this well-loved local spot is the natural place for an early dinner before the drive home. The kitchen turns out generous Southern meat-and-three cooking — fried chicken, country-fried steak, cornbread, and a full slate of vegetable sides — in a relaxed small-town room. A hot, unfussy meal is the right way to close two hard days in the Cohutta backcountry before the ninety-minute run back to Chattanooga.
