The Lost Sea, Sweetwater Valley & McMinn County Heritage
About an hour northeast of Chattanooga, the rolling valley farmland of Sweetwater and Athens hides one of the strangest natural wonders in the Southeast — the Lost Sea, America's largest underground lake, buried inside the vast Craighead Caverns. This two-day journey pairs that subterranean marvel with the rich agricultural and small-town heritage of McMinn County. Day one descends into the caverns to glide across the hidden lake by glass-bottom boat, then samples farmstead cheese at the Sweetwater Valley Farm. Day two follows the trail of the region's dairy history at the Mayfield Dairy, digs into the county's storied past — including the famous 1946 'Battle of Athens' — at the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum, and wanders the antique mills of tiny Englewood before the return drive. Overnighting in the Athens/Sweetwater area, it is a warm, unhurried immersion in East Tennessee's valley country.
