One of the most evocative industrial-heritage sites in the Southeast, the Dunlap Coke Ovens Park preserves hundreds of beehive-shaped brick ovens strung along the base of Fredonia Mountain. Between 1901 and the 1920s these ovens baked local coal into coke for the region's iron furnaces, and the long rows of half-ruined brick domes now stand quietly among the trees, reclaimed by grass and wildflowers. A small museum in the restored commissary tells the story of the coal towns and the miners who worked them, and easy walking paths thread the 62-acre site along Coops Creek. It's a peaceful, slightly haunting place to start the day, and free to wander. Allow an hour to walk the oven rows and browse the museum.

Henson's Gap Hang Gliding Launch

High on the western rim of the Sequatchie Valley above Dunlap, Henson's Gap is one of the finest hang-gliding and paragliding launch sites in the eastern United States, run by the long-established Tennessee Tree Toppers club. On days with good conditions, pilots line the grassy ramp and step off the bluff into the rising valley air, wheeling out over the farmland far below — a genuine spectacle to watch from the overlook. Even when no one is flying, the view down the arrow-straight valley from the launch is superb, and the drive up the plateau road is worth it on its own. Bring a chair and let the afternoon go by watching the sky.

Sequatchie Valley Farm Roads Drive

The Sequatchie Valley is famous among geographers as one of the straightest and most symmetrical valleys on earth, and the best way to feel it is a slow drive down its quiet farm roads. Off the main highway, narrow lanes run for miles between the two long bluffs, past red barns, silos, grazing cattle, and fields that stretch to the base of the mountains on either side. Roll the windows down, take the side roads at random, and let the pace slow to nothing. Late-afternoon light along the valley floor is especially fine, with both rims catching the sun before the drive back to Chattanooga.
