Lookout Mountain Plateau: Mentone, Sequoyah Caverns & Little River

Lookout Mountain is a long sandstone plateau extending from Chattanooga south into Alabama — and its southern end in DeKalb County, AL is entirely different from the tourist-heavy northern end near the city. Mentone on the Alabama brow is a small arts community on the western rim, with a single street of wooden galleries and the Mentone Inn B&B. Sequoyah Caverns in Valley Head is the most visually unusual cave in the region — a system of clear reflecting pools that mirror the cave formations in perfect detail, creating an apparent depth twice the real depth. Little River Canyon at the southern end of the plateau is the natural conclusion: a 12-mile rim road above a 600-foot gorge cut by the only river in the United States that flows entirely on a mountaintop. Three days across the full Lookout Mountain plateau at a genuinely unhurried pace.

Day 1 — Mentone, AL: Lookout Mountain brow overlook, village galleries, Mentone Inn overnightDay 2 — Sequoyah Caverns (reflecting pools cave), DeSoto Falls, overnight Fort Payne, ALDay 3 — Little River Canyon rim drive, Eberhart Point, return to Chattanooga

Mentone Village — Gallery & Craft Walk
Mentone Village — Gallery & Craft Walk
A small arts colony on the western brow of Lookout Mountain in northeast Alabama — a 19th-century resort village that attracted summer visitors from the lowland heat and evolved into a cluster of working artists' studios, galleries, and B&Bs on the plateau rim. The single commercial street of wooden storefronts, the Mentone Inn, and the mountain laurel-shaded brow road are the essential Mentone experience.

Lunch
Lookout Mountain Brow Road — Valley Views
Lookout Mountain Brow Road — Valley Views
4.8
The western rim of Lookout Mountain above the Wills Valley floor — informal overlook points along the brow road near Mentone with views across the Ridge and Valley country stretching west toward Centre, Alabama. The plateau here runs 10 degrees cooler than the valley in midsummer; the lunch stop at one of Mentone's small restaurants or a brow-side picnic is the standard midday format.
☀️
Afternoon
DeSoto State Park — Little River Walk
DeSoto State Park — Little River Walk
4.8
The state park immediately adjacent to Mentone — easy walking trails along the upper Little River through second-growth riparian hardwoods with several small cascades and sandstone ledge crossings. The Little River here is the same river that later drops into Little River Canyon to the south; the calm upper section in the state park gives no indication of the dramatic geology downstream.
🌙
Evening
Mentone Inn
Mentone Inn
4.7
The historic Victorian-era bed and breakfast that anchors Mentone village — individually decorated rooms, a wraparound porch overlooking the main street, and walking distance to the Hitching Post restaurant. The DeSoto State Park Lodge is the alternative for those who prefer cabin accommodations in the park itself.

Sequoyah Caverns
3.9
A privately operated show cave in Valley Head, AL at the base of Sand Mountain — notable for its series of perfectly still reflecting pools that mirror the cave formations in exact detail, creating the illusion that the cave continues downward into the rock when in fact the reflection shows the ceiling above. The guided tour visits the principal formation chambers and the reflecting pool series; the cave temperature holds at 60°F year-round. Named for the Cherokee scholar Sequoyah who developed the Cherokee syllabary.

Lunch
DeSoto Falls — Little River Canyon NP
DeSoto Falls — Little River Canyon NP
4.8
The 100-foot upper falls where the Little River drops off the Lookout Mountain plateau into the upper canyon — a dramatic introduction to the Little River Canyon National Preserve accessed by a short trail from the parking area. The falls mark the transition from the calm plateau river to the canyon system below.
☀️
Afternoon
Fort Payne — Alabama Fan Club Museum
Fort Payne — Alabama Fan Club Museum
The Alabama Fan Club and Museum in downtown Fort Payne — a tribute to the country band Alabama, which formed in Fort Payne in 1969 and became one of the best-selling country acts of the 1980s. The museum displays awards, stage outfits, instruments, and memorabilia; Fort Payne's identity is substantially tied to the band's national success. An unexpectedly engaging afternoon stop before settling in for the night.

4.1
A comfortable overnight in Fort Payne — the most convenient base for the full Little River Canyon rim road in the morning before the return north to Chattanooga. The commercial corridor on US-11 has a good range of dinner options.

Little River Canyon Rim Road
Little River Canyon Rim Road
A 12-mile paved rim road paralleling Little River Canyon through Little River Canyon National Preserve — with pull-offs at overlooks, river access points, and canyon viewpoints above the 600-foot gorge. The Little River is one of the few rivers in the United States that flows entirely on top of a mountain plateau (Lookout Mountain) before dropping into a canyon. The rim road is the most relaxed way to experience the canyon's full extent.

Eberhart Point — Little River Canyon NP
Eberhart Point — Little River Canyon NP
4.9
The most dramatic overlook on the Little River Canyon rim — a rocky promontory 600 feet above the river where the canyon walls drop sheer on two sides. The river sound carries from below on still days; the canyon here is at its narrowest and deepest. A short walk from a rim road pull-off, appropriate for all fitness levels.
