Springfield: Lincoln's Home, Library & Old State Capitol

A Springfield craft brewery in a building directly across from the Governor's Mansion, serving house-brewed beers alongside elevated American pub food. The Lincoln-adjacent naming (Obed Lewis and Isaac Cogdal were both Lincoln associates) reflects the city's embrace of its heritage without parody; the food quality has improved substantially since the brewery's 2012 opening.

The 23 log structures are accurate reconstructions of the original village; costumed interpreters demonstrate frontier trades (blacksmithing, carding wool, coopering) in the buildings Lincoln actually frequented. According to popular legend, Lincoln discovered his first law book — Blackstone's Commentaries — in a barrel of miscellaneous goods he purchased from a settler passing through New Salem.

Frank Lloyd Wright's most fully realized Prairie Style commission (1902) — 35 rooms designed with custom art glass, built-in furniture, and geometrically unified interiors that constitute the clearest statement of Wright's Prairie School philosophy. The commission came from Susan Lawrence Dana, a Springfield suffragist and social reformer; Wright designed everything from the floorplan to the door hardware. The house has been a state historic site since 1981 and is the best-preserved large Prairie House in existence.
