Door County Fish Boils, Folk Art & Norwegian Heritage

Founded in 1935 by landscape architect Jens Jensen on 128 acres of Door County woodland above Green Bay, The Clearing is the oldest continuously operating adult folk school in North America. Jensen designed the campus as a place for adult intellectual renewal through contact with the natural world; the stone buildings, meadow clearings, and Great Lakes shoreline trail constitute the most intentional landscape in Door County. Week-long residential programs in arts, writing, and natural history run May through October; day visitors can walk the campus trail.

The 30-minute Washington Island Ferry crosses Death's Door Passage — the strait that gave the Door Peninsula its name, where Wisconsin's deadliest Lake Michigan shipwrecks occurred between 1679 and the late 19th century. Washington Island is home to the oldest Icelandic-American community in the United States, settled in the 1870s by Icelandic fishermen; the 650 permanent residents maintain a year-round community unlike the seasonal character of the peninsula's tourist towns.

A Washington Island institution since 1899 — the island's oldest bar, which maintained its liquor license through Prohibition by operating as a pharmacy dispensing bitters for 'medicinal purposes.' The Bitters Club offers a shot of Angostura bitters in exchange for club membership; over 100,000 members have enrolled since the tradition began. The island's agricultural history preserved in a collection of early 20th-century farm equipment, a restored 1903 farmhouse, and a root cellar demonstrating the island community's self-sufficiency during the pre-ferry era. The surrounding fields show why Icelandic settlers chose this location — deep soil, moderate lake-effect climate, and a growing season longer than the surrounding mainland.
