Lake Geneva, Elkhart Lake & Door County Introduction

Three genuinely different Great Lakes resort experiences within driving range: Lake Geneva's Victorian estate shores and grand spa culture, Elkhart Lake's German-immigrant racing village with a Gilded Age hotel, and the southern Door Peninsula's fish boils and preserved Scandinavian waterfront in Sturgeon Bay.

The 26-mile footpath circling Geneva Lake is the oldest continuously used public trail in Wisconsin — a right-of-way preserved by state law since 1917 that passes directly through the grounds of the Gilded Age estates built by Chicago industrialists (Wrigley, Crane, Schwinn, and Swift among them). The path is flat, largely wooded, and walkable in sections; the most atmospheric stretch runs from the Lake Geneva downtown boat landing east past the estate gardens to the Riviera Ballroom.

Simple Cafe
4.6
A Lake Geneva institution in a building on Main Street with a focused seasonal menu and the best coffee in Walworth County. The egg dishes and grain bowls reflect actual cooking; the baked goods are produced in-house rather than sourced from a distributor. Weekend brunch lines extend out the door — the weekday morning visit is the calmer choice.

Oakfire Restaurant
A wood-fired pizzeria in Lake Geneva's commercial district producing Neapolitan-influenced pies with quality Wisconsin-sourced ingredients — the house sausage is made with local pork, the vegetables are seasonal, and the wood-fired cooking temperature produces properly charred and blistered crusts. The craft beer and wine list reflects the Midwest's improving producer landscape.

A Wisconsin resort hotel in continuous operation since 1916 on the shores of Elkhart Lake — one of the clearest spring-fed lakes in Wisconsin at 98 feet deep. Siebkens predates the Road America motorsports complex and hosted the original road races on the public village streets in the 1950s; the Tap Room is the oldest bar in the county and maintains a racing memorabilia collection alongside the original 1916 bar fixtures.

The restaurant adjacent to Road America's historic paddock serves the surprisingly good food that an internationally attended motorsports venue requires — from bratwurst and fish fry to the full dining room menu when events are running. The outdoor terrace faces the original paddock area where Fangio, Moss, and Hill raced on the public roads in the 1950s before Road America's permanent circuit opened in 1955.

Road America is North America's longest permanent road racing circuit at 4.048 miles, built in 1955 and largely unchanged in character. On non-race weekends the circuit is open for spectator walking access — the Corvette Bridge overlook at Turn 5, the Canada Corner entry, and the Carousel banking give the most visceral sense of the track's topography. The adjacent Road America Hall of Fame museum covers 70 years of American road racing history.

An evening in Siebkens' 1916 Tap Room — a Wisconsin bar that has served racing drivers, resort guests, and local farmers continuously for over a century. The Friday fish fry is the week's social event in Elkhart Lake; the Wisconsin craft beer taps rotate seasonally. The bar's racing memorabilia and the lake visible through the front windows make it one of the most atmospheric rooms in Wisconsin.

The full history of Lake Michigan's most commercially significant channel — the maritime museum's indoor collection covers commercial fishing, passenger steamships, and the shipbuilding industry that made Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin's most important port. The outdoor boat collection includes a WWII LST landing craft and commercial fishing tugs; the museum's research library is the most complete Great Lakes maritime archive in Wisconsin.

Bluefront Cafe — Sturgeon Bay Fish Boil
Bluefront Cafe — Sturgeon Bay Fish Boil
Door County's most authentic and least theatrical fish boil — a cast-iron cauldron of Lake Michigan whitefish steaks and red potatoes, simmered in heavily salted water and finished with the kerosene boilover that purges the fish oils. The Bluefront has been doing this since 1949 with a consistency that makes it the baseline against which other Door County fish boils are measured. The cherry pie is made with Door County tart cherries from surrounding Sturgeon Bay orchards.

Cave Point County Park

Lake Michigan's surge action has carved a series of sea caves and grottoes into the Niagara dolomite bedrock at the water line — the 0.25-mile cave sequence includes arches, blow holes, and cavern chambers accessible by kayak at calm water or by the overlook path above. In winter the wave spray creates ice formations; in summer the cave interiors show the geological contrast between the lake-polished lower rock and the rough dolomite above the wave line.
