Pikes Peak Cog Railway & Manitou Springs Spa

Two days reaching the summit of Pikes Peak without hiking — the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway (Cog Railway) has operated since 1891 and remains the highest cog railway in North America, climbing from Manitou Springs at 6,571 feet to the 14,115-foot summit in 3.3 hours on a 9-mile route. The railway was commissioned by Zalmon Simmons (of Simmons Beautyrest mattress fame) after he suffered through the mule ride to the summit in 1889 and decided there had to be a better way. The round trip takes the full morning; the afternoon is devoted to Manitou Springs' historic spa district — the eight free mineral springs, the Victorian Cliff House Hotel, and Cave of the Winds Mountain Park where a cave system in the Williams Canyon limestone provides a guided underground tour.

Day 1 — Cog Railway to Pikes Peak summit (no hiking, 3.3hr scenic rail trip), overnight Manitou SpringsDay 2 — Cave of the Winds (cave tour), Manitou Springs mineral springs stroll, return to Colorado Springs

The Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway — the highest cog railway in North America, operating since 1891 on a 9-mile route from Manitou Springs (6,571 feet) to the Pikes Peak summit (14,115 feet). The modern Swiss Stadler Rail carriages (replacing the original steam locomotives in 2021) take 3.3 hours round trip; the route passes through all vegetation zones from Sonoran scrub to alpine tundra. Tickets must be purchased in advance; the railway operates seasonally (generally May-October). The summit stop is 30-40 minutes at the top.

The 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak by train — the rebuilt 2021 summit visitor center with a cafeteria, gift shop, and educational exhibits, plus the open-air summit views over 100+ miles of Colorado plains and peaks. The fresh donuts (altitude-baked since the 1920s) are the summit's most persistent tradition; the thin air at 14,115 feet makes exertion inadvisable even for those arriving by train. Average temperature at the summit in summer is 34°F; the train descent provides the same landscape in reverse.

The eight publicly accessible mineral springs of Manitou Springs — all free, all in Victorian-era drinking pavilions within walking distance of downtown. The Soda Spring (2 blocks from the Cog Railway station), the Navajo Spring (Iron Avenue), and the Cheyenne Spring (Ruxton Avenue) are the three closest to the railway. Each spring has a distinctly different mineral composition and taste; the tradition of drinking from all eight is a Manitou Springs custom dating to the resort era.

The 1874 National Register Victorian hotel in Manitou Springs — an 8-minute walk from the Cog Railway station. The full-service spa is the natural complement to a Pikes Peak summit day; the dining room serves dinner in a period-appropriate Victorian setting. The hotel's veranda faces the mountain.

A guided 45-minute walk through Cave of the Winds in the Williams Canyon limestone — discovered by two brothers in 1880, the cave operates as a commercial cave attraction with a 45-minute 'Discovery Tour' through the formation rooms and a longer 'Adventure Tour' option. The cave maintains a constant 54°F temperature; the formations include stalactites, stalagmites, popcorn, and cave bacon. Williams Canyon above the cave entrance is a narrow limestone gorge accessible by a short trail.

A final Manitou Springs midday walk along Ruxton Avenue — the main commercial street leading toward the Cog Railway station, with a concentration of cafes, galleries, and the historic mineral spring pavilions. The Briarhurst Manor Estate (1876 stone manor of the first Colorado Springs mayor) and the Miramont Castle (1895 nine-style mansion) are both within walking distance for exterior viewing.
