The railway was commissioned by Zalmon Simmons (of Simmons Beautyrest mattress fame) after he suffered through the mule ride to the summit in 1889 and decided there had to be a better way. The round trip takes the full morning; the afternoon is devoted to Manitou Springs' historic spa district — the eight free mineral springs, the Victorian Cliff House Hotel, and Cave of the Winds Mountain Park where a cave system in the Williams Canyon limestone provides a guided underground tour.
