Broadmoor, Royal Gorge Train & Florissant Fossil Stroll

Three unhurried days in the Colorado Springs region that involve no demanding hiking — The Broadmoor resort and Garden of the Gods scenic drive on day one, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad on day two (the most relaxed way to experience the 1,000-foot canyon), and the Florissant Fossil Beds walking path on day three. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad runs a 2-hour excursion train from Canon City through the floor of the Royal Gorge — the Arkansas River fills most of the available canyon width at the narrowest point, and the 1,000-foot granite walls rise immediately above the train windows. No hiking, no heights, no exertion; just watching the canyon walls pass in a comfortable coach car. Florissant on the return involves a flat 1-mile loop through the petrified sequoia stumps — the least demanding walk at any national monument.

The Garden of the Gods scenic drive — all major formations visible from the car with wide pull-offs at Balanced Rock, the Three Graces, the Gateway Rocks, and the Siamese Twins overlook parking area (a 5-minute walk from the parking area reaches the Pikes Peak frame view). The park is free, open 24 hours, and a National Natural Landmark. Morning light from the east is the best lighting for the red sandstone.

Lunch at The Broadmoor — the 1918 Italian Renaissance resort at the foot of Cheyenne Mountain, with Cheyenne Lake immediately in front of the main building and Cheyenne Mountain rising behind it. The Golden Bee pub (transplanted from England in 1961), the Lake Terrace Dining Room, and the Tavern are the main midday options. The resort's public areas (lobby, lake terrace, lakeside gardens) are accessible without a room reservation.

An afternoon at The Broadmoor's spa and lake terrace — the spa (Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa) offers treatments available to non-hotel guests by appointment. The lake terrace is a free public space; the 1.5-mile lake walk circles Cheyenne Lake through the resort grounds. The Broadmoor's collection of historic photographs in the public areas documents the resort's history from its 1918 opening through the visits of seven US Presidents.

A 2-hour scenic excursion through the Royal Gorge floor on the historic Hanging Bridge railroad — the route laid in 1880 during the 'Royal Gorge War' between rival railroads. The coach cars and dome cars provide direct views of the 1,000-foot Precambrian granite canyon walls closing in overhead. The train passes the Hanging Bridge section where the original railroaders solved the canyon narrowing problem by hanging the track from the cliff wall on a timber cantilever. Morning departures from Canon City typically depart at 9am and 10:30am.

Canon City — Downtown & Arkansas River Walk
The small downtown of Canon City and the Arkansas River Trail — Canon City's 1880s brick commercial buildings and the river trail along the Arkansas in its lower canyon section. The Royal Gorge Bridge can be driven to (15 minutes west) for a panoramic view into the canyon from 1,053 feet above the river without any walking requirements beyond the bridge deck.

Afternoon
Canon City — Afternoon Rest
Canon City — Afternoon Rest
An easy afternoon in Canon City — the historic district, the Royal Gorge Museum at the Canon City Carnegie Library, and the cluster of local restaurants. Canon City's lower elevation (5,332 feet, vs. Colorado Springs' 6,035 feet) makes it warmer and less prone to afternoon thunderstorms; afternoon temperatures in summer regularly reach 90°F.

Overnight in Canon City — the Quality Inn Royal Gorge is the primary mid-range option; the Best Western Plus Royal Gorge is closer to the river. Canon City's downtown has a handful of dinner restaurants. The Florissant Fossil Beds drive next morning is 60 minutes north via a scenic mountain highway.

A flat 1-mile loop walk through the outdoor petrified sequoia stumps at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument — some of the largest petrified wood specimens in the world, preserved in their original growing positions when a 34-million-year-old lahar buried and mineralized the root systems. The walk is fully accessible, requires no elevation gain, and passes through an open meadow; the stumps are at ground level with interpretive signs at each specimen. The 'Big Stump' at 74-foot circumference is the visual climax.
