Broadmoor, Royal Gorge Train & Florissant Fossil Stroll
Three unhurried days in the Colorado Springs region that involve no demanding hiking — The Broadmoor resort and Garden of the Gods scenic drive on day one, the Royal Gorge Route Railroad on day two (the most relaxed way to experience the 1,000-foot canyon), and the Florissant Fossil Beds walking path on day three. The Royal Gorge Route Railroad runs a 2-hour excursion train from Canon City through the floor of the Royal Gorge — the Arkansas River fills most of the available canyon width at the narrowest point, and the 1,000-foot granite walls rise immediately above the train windows. No hiking, no heights, no exertion; just watching the canyon walls pass in a comfortable coach car. Florissant on the return involves a flat 1-mile loop through the petrified sequoia stumps — the least demanding walk at any national monument.
