Salt Fork State Park — Ohio's Largest Wild, Its Lake & Hosak's Cave

The scenic highlight of Salt Fork's trail system, Hosak's Cave is a wide sandstone recess cave — a 50-foot-deep overhang carved into the hillside, with a seasonal waterfall spilling over its lip after rain and a natural amphitheater of stone beneath. A short but rugged trail drops from the parking area through hemlock and hardwood to the base of the recess, where the acoustics and the dripping rock give the hollow a genuinely cavernous feel. Legend ties the site to a frontiersman named Hosak who is said to have used the shelter; the geology is pure eastern-Ohio caprock sandstone. Best after rain or in spring when the falls run; the descent can be slick, so wear grippy footwear.

Salt Fork Lake's beach is the longest inland public beach in Ohio — a broad crescent of sand on the park's largest cove, backed by picnic lawns and bathhouse facilities. The 2,952-acre lake is the centerpiece of the park, its many fingers and inlets reaching deep into the wooded hills, and the beach and adjacent overlooks are the natural place to pause midday. Swim in summer, wade and skip stones in the shoulder seasons, or just take in the water and the surrounding ridgelines. Bring a picnic — the shaded tables above the beach are among the best lunch spots in the park.

The Stone House Trail is Salt Fork's finest half-day hike, a wooded loop along the lakeshore that leads to the Kennedy Stone House — a handsome sandstone farmhouse built in 1837, restored and preserved on a bluff overlooking an arm of the lake. The path threads through mature hardwood forest with repeated water views, passing coves where herons fish and where the park's abundant deer and wild turkey are often seen in the late-afternoon quiet. The Stone House itself is open seasonally, staffed by volunteers who tell the story of the family that farmed this ground before the lake was impounded. A peaceful, history-tinged walk to close out the park day; roughly 2 to 3 miles round trip depending on the loop chosen.
