An hour south of Columbus in the Scioto Valley, Chillicothe was Ohio's first state capital and stands amid one of the greatest concentrations of ancient earthworks on the continent. Hopewell Culture National Historical Park — Mound City
★ 4.7Mound City is the crown of Hopewell Culture National Historical Park and one of the eight sites inscribed together on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023. Behind a low earthen wall, more than twenty grass-covered burial mounds stand in a tended enclosure — the reconstructed ceremonial ground of the Hopewell people, who between roughly 200 BC and 500 AD built monumental earthworks across the Scioto Valley and gathered here from across eastern North America. Excavations here yielded some of the finest ancient art on the continent: mica cutouts, copper effigies, and pipes carved as birds and animals, now displayed in the visitor center. Walking among the mounds, with the interpretive trail explaining the astronomy and trade networks behind them, is a quietly astonishing start to the trip.

★ 4.7On a hill overlooking Chillicothe stands Adena, the 1807 stone mansion of Thomas Worthington, one of Ohio's first U.S. senators and its sixth governor, often called the father of Ohio statehood. Designed by Benjamin Latrobe, architect of the U.S. Capitol, the house is a rare surviving example of Federal-era grandeur on the frontier, restored with period furnishings and surrounded by re-created gardens; the view from its grounds toward Mount Logan is said to have inspired the scene on the Great Seal of Ohio. The estate also lends its name to the Adena culture, the mound-building people whose works predate the Hopewell — a fitting bridge between the day's ancient and frontier history. Allow time for the visitor center and the walk through the gardens.
