Three days climbing into the Ouachita Mountains, the only major range in North America that runs east-to-west, where forested ridges rise abruptly out of the Oklahoma and Arkansas plains. Day one breaks the drive at Robbers Cave State Park near Wilburton, a warren of sandstone bluffs and hidden crevices that sheltered outlaws like Belle Starr and the Dalton Gang before pushing on to the mountain town of Talihina. Day two is the centerpiece: the 54-mile Talimena National Scenic Byway, a ridge-top road that traces the spine of Winding Stair and Rich Mountain from overlook to overlook, crossing the state line into Arkansas to the Castle in the Sky lodge at Queen Wilhelmina State Park, perched near the second-highest point in the state. Day three winds down through the Ouachita National Forest at Cedar Lake and Horsethief Springs for a final forest walk before the long drive back to Dallas.
