Turner Falls & the Arbuckles — Oklahoma's Tallest Waterfall, Castle Ruins & Swimming Holes

A swim-and-scramble day trip into the ancient Arbuckle Mountains, one of the oldest exposed mountain ranges in North America and an easy 95-minute run up I-35 from Dallas. The centerpiece is Turner Falls, a 77-foot cascade — the tallest waterfall in Oklahoma — that drops into a wide, cold natural swimming pool at the base of a rugged canyon. Above the falls, the 1930s stone ruins of Collings Castle are built straight into the bluff and can be freely explored, while Honey Creek carves a string of shallow swimming and wading areas through the park, and two small caves wait to be scrambled into near the falls. It's a day of cool water, warm rock, and a castle in the hills, with the option to load up on famous roadside fried pies and Oklahoma-made chocolate on the way home.

Mineola & Canton — Antiques, a Soda Fountain & the Sabine River Bottoms

An unhurried day trip into the piney woods and railroad towns of East Texas, an hour or so east of Dallas. Mineola is a slow, walkable railroad town with a restored 1920s theater, a downtown full of antique shops, and an old hardware store that still runs a working soda fountain. Just outside town, the Mineola Nature Preserve spreads across nearly 3,000 acres of the Sabine River bottoms — easy trails through prairie, wetland, and hardwood forest, and some of the best birding in the region. A short drive west, Canton hosts First Monday Trade Days, one of the largest open-air flea markets on earth. The pace is deliberately gentle: a morning walk among the birds, an afternoon of antiquing, and a burger or a malt at the soda fountain, with nothing on the schedule you can't skip.

Denison & Sherman — Eisenhower's Birthplace & Red River Squares

An easy day trip an hour north of Dallas into the Red River Valley, where two historic railroad towns pair small-town Texas charm with a genuine footnote in American history. The centerpiece is the modest frame house in Denison where Dwight D. Eisenhower — supreme Allied commander in Europe and thirty-fourth president — was born in 1890, now a state historic site. Around it lie the restored brick storefronts and the landmark Rialto of downtown Denison's Main Street, the wide waters of Lake Texoma behind the Denison Dam, and Sherman's own historic square and Kelly Square. Birders can add the nearby Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and its auto tour along the lakeshore. It's a relaxed day of history, architecture, and courthouse-square wandering, all within comfortable reach of home by evening.
