Leadville: America's Highest City & Mining History

The definitive collection of American hardrock mining history, housed in a Victorian school building at 10,000 feet. The exhibits cover the technology of underground mining from picks and candles to pneumatic drills and electric headlamps, with a recreation of an 1870s mine portal visitors can walk through. The Leadville section covers the Carbonate Camp discovery of 1877 — the richest silver discovery in American history at that time — and the subsequent boom that produced the Tabor fortune. Horace Tabor went from running a general store to being Colorado's wealthiest man in less than four years; Augusta Tabor's story (left behind when Horace married Baby Doe) is the more compelling half of the history.

Leadville's main commercial street is the best-preserved Victorian mining town streetscape in Colorado — a 5-block strip of 1879-1890s brick commercial fronts at 10,152 feet. The Tabor Opera House (1879) hosted Oscar Wilde, Harry Houdini, and John Philip Sousa during Leadville's boom years; guided tours of the interior (original stage machinery, painted drop curtains, balcony seating) are available seasonally. The Healy House (1878, National Historic Landmark) and the Dexter Cabin (1879, rustic exterior, baroque interior) are operated by Colorado Parks & Wildlife and are the most atmospheric historic properties in Leadville.

Leadville's restaurant scene is limited but earnest — the Tennessee Pass Cookhouse (a converted railroad cookhouse with mountain views) and the Silver Dollar Saloon (1879 original back bar) are the cultural anchors. The Quincy's Steak and Spirits on Harrison serves reliable Colorado beef and local craft beer in a historic brick space.

Turquoise Lake sits at 9,993 feet 3 miles west of Leadville — a reservoir formed by the Homestake Project (Colorado-Big Thompson) and surrounded by spruce-fir forest with views toward the Sawatch Range. The 9.5-mile Turquoise Lake Trail loop is flat and entirely paved, making it accessible by bike; the Sugarloaf Campground area at the lake's south end has the best mountain views. The lake's turquoise color comes from mineral sediment in the Rocky Mountain runoff.

Colorado Highway 82 crosses the Continental Divide at Independence Pass — the highest paved through-route in Colorado, open late May to October. The summit parking area at 12,095 feet is a short walk from the Divide itself; a 0.3-mile trail reaches the exact divide where the Roaring Fork River (draining to the Pacific) and the Lake Fork of the Arkansas (draining to the Atlantic) separate. The ghost town of Independence (1879 gold camp, 10 miles east of the pass) is visible from the road as a collection of original log buildings.

Twin Lakes village (1879, at 9,210 feet) is a tiny historic community on the shore of the largest natural lakes in Colorado — Twin Lakes are glacially carved reservoirs at the base of Mount Elbert (14,433 ft, Colorado's highest peak). The village has six original structures including the Interlaken Resort (1879, now a historical site accessible by 4WD) and the Twin Lakes Inn. Mount Elbert's east face rises directly above the lakes; the standard Elbert trailhead (South Mount Elbert Trail, 9.5 miles RT, 4,700 ft gain) is 4 miles from the village.

The Twin Lakes Inn has operated on the lakeshore since 1879 in various forms — the current restaurant serves burgers, sandwiches, and Colorado craft beers with direct lake and Mount Elbert views. A genuinely historic lunch stop in one of Colorado's most scenic settings.
