Idaho Springs: Hot Springs, History & Clear Creek

Colorado's oldest geothermal resort, operating continuously since 1863 when Coloradans discovered Native Americans using the spring. The spring emerges at 124°F from the Precambrian granite; the resort pipes it to indoor vapor caves (a series of naturally heated tunnel pools carved from the bedrock, 112°F), outdoor pools, and individual soaking tubs. The vapor caves are the unique feature — subterranean chambers where the geothermal steam creates a 90% humidity environment that the resort's original Victorian owners marketed as a cure for rheumatism and nervous conditions. The modern medical claim is simply that it feels extraordinary.

Idaho Springs' main commercial street preserves its 1870s-1890s mining town character — a compact two-block stretch with original brick buildings housing cafes, bars, and one-off shops. The Argo Gold Mine on Water Street (open for tours) is the most prominent industrial landmark; the Clear Creek Canyon downstream has three miles of Class II-III whitewater visible from the river path. Tommy Knocker Brewery (on Miner Street since 1994) is the local institution for post-soak beer.

Idaho Springs' section of Clear Creek has been developed for kayaking with a series of rock gardens and drops — the downtown whitewater park (accessible by a riverside path from the Miner Street parking) lets visitors watch kayakers run Class III features from close range. In summer, the creek runs 800-1,200 cfs through basalt-walled canyon; the sound alone is worth the walk. The path continues downstream for 2 miles through the canyon.
