Mount Bierstadt: Denver's Most Accessible 14er

The trailhead sits at 11,669 feet on Guanella Pass Road south of Georgetown. The route crosses Scott Gomer Creek through a willows basin (often boggy until July) before climbing the southwest ridge above treeline — the final half-mile is a rocky scramble on Class 2 terrain. Total elevation gain is 2,850 feet over 3.5 miles one-way. Start by 6am in summer to beat afternoon thunderstorms; summit lightning risk above treeline becomes serious after noon. The summit at 14,060 feet gives a 360-degree panorama including neighboring Mount Evans and the Continental Divide.

A Georgetown institution in a Victorian building on 6th Street — homemade soups, sandwiches, and the pies that regulars plan their Georgetown visits around. After 4+ hours on a 14er, the green chile soup and a slice of strawberry rhubarb pie hits hard. Unpretentious, local, and genuinely good.

Georgetown Lake sits at 8,530 feet in the valley below the historic mining district — a short, flat loop around the reservoir gives views back up toward the Continental Divide and a chance to decompress after the summit push. The Clear Creek trail from the lake into town passes several of Georgetown's 200+ National Register Victorian buildings. The Hamill House (1874) and Hotel de Paris (1875, now a museum) are two blocks from the lake trailhead.
