Grand Teton: Jenny Lake & Cascade Canyon

Grand Teton National Park begins immediately north of Jackson — the Cathedral Group of peaks rises 7,000 feet from the Jackson Hole valley floor in what is widely regarded as the most dramatic mountain-to-valley elevation gain in the lower 48 states. Jenny Lake is the gateway to the park's best single-day active itinerary: a short boat shuttle across the lake to the Hidden Falls trailhead, the 0.5-mile hike to Hidden Falls, the ascent to Inspiration Point overlook (360-degree panorama of Jenny Lake, the valley, and the Teton Range), and then the full Cascade Canyon trail into the canyon interior below the Grand Teton massif. The round-trip from the east shore to the canyon entrance and back covers 7.2 miles if taking the boat; the canyon trail extends as far as the Lake Solitude and Paintbrush Canyon junction for more ambitious days. One of the most spectacular day hikes in the American West.

The Jenny Lake boat shuttle crosses the glacially carved lake in 10 minutes, dropping hikers at the Hidden Falls trailhead on the west shore — the most efficient start to the Cascade Canyon circuit. Hidden Falls drops 200 feet through a narrow canyon of Precambrian granite; the trail from the boat landing is 0.5 miles. Boats depart from the south shore trailhead and run continuously from 7am in the summer season. Arrive early to avoid boat queue waits.

A 200-foot rocky knob above Hidden Falls with a 360-degree panorama — Jenny Lake gleaming below, the flat sagebrush expanse of Jackson Hole valley, and the full Teton Range rising behind. The viewpoint is 0.5 miles above Hidden Falls on the same trail; most day hikers turn around here. For those continuing, the Cascade Canyon trail climbs from Inspiration Point into the canyon interior between the Grand Teton and Mount Owen.

The Cascade Canyon trail extending from Inspiration Point into the glacier-carved canyon between the Grand Teton and Mount Owen — 2.5 miles of relatively flat trail through subalpine meadows, willow flats frequented by moose and black bear, and creek crossings under the 13,775-foot Grand Teton summit. The canyon fork at mile 4.3 offers options to Lake Solitude or Paintbrush Canyon; most day hikers turn at the fork. Return by the outer shore trail (no boat needed) completes a 7-8 mile loop.
