A day over the pass to the western, Idaho side of the Teton Range, where the same peaks that dominate Jackson rise above green farm valleys and forest without the crowds. Crossing Teton Pass drops you into Teton Valley and the small towns of Victor and Driggs, gateway to Grand Targhee and the wild Teton Canyon. The day pairs the high alpine at Grand Targhee — a summer trail network on the western flank of the range with head-on views of the Grand Teton's back side — with a hike up Teton Canyon toward the base of Table Mountain, and a relaxed meal in Driggs or Victor. It is the Tetons seen from behind, greener, quieter, and entirely outside the national park.

Grand Targhee Resort Summer Trails
★ 4.5Perched on the western flank of the Tetons at Alta, Grand Targhee trades its famous powder for a summer trail network of hiking and lift-served mountain biking with a jaw-dropping perspective on the range. Ride the scenic chairlift to the top of Fred's Mountain, where the Grand Teton, Middle Teton, and South Teton line the eastern horizon, seen from the back and far closer than from Jackson. From the summit a web of alpine trails traverses wildflower meadows loud with birdsong through July and August. The resort base has a lodge, coffee, and gear rental, and the whole scene is a fraction as busy as the Wyoming side. It is the finest single vantage on the western Tetons.

Driggs itself is a walkable little mountain town with a brewery, coffee roasters, and outfitters if you want to wander the main street before heading up Teton Canyon.

Teton Canyon Trail toward Table Mountain
★ 4.8East of Driggs, a forest road climbs into Teton Canyon on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, a broad glacial valley cutting straight into the western Tetons. From the trailhead the path follows the South Fork of Teton Creek through wildflower meadows and spruce forest, with the granite spires of the range towering overhead; the full route to the summit of Table Mountain is a strenuous all-day climb famed for its head-on view of the Grand, but even a two- or three-mile out-and-back delivers the canyon's alpine grandeur. Moose are common in the willow bottoms and the creek runs cold and clear. It is a genuine backcountry Teton experience with none of the park's crowds.
